Why does KNOPPIX (or Linux) need so many accounts?

You don't need them, but it can be convenient for grouping some things.
Note that there's groups and users too... at least on my system, games is a group rather than a user.

For 'priviledges' to the directories?

[edit]
I think I've found out how to store the home directory on my computer...

[edit2]
Yep, I have it. I have to 'Create kernel image onto existing partition' and every bootup I need to type "knoppix home=/dev/hda1 myconf=/dev/hda1"

Meaning the home directory and the configurations are stored in C:\
:)
