Man, that's not Half Life 3. That's Matrix ;D. The agents must avoid people who "wake up", and one possible solution is tell him that they are in a videogame called "Half Life".

The level designer and texture artists should be shot.

Rash: I don't care. Why do you keep having these little digs at me? Have I done something to offend you? Umm.. Are you aware that you do this? ???

Heh, the sad thing is that faked photo isn't really that different from HL2, if you look at it. True, you would have to alter the levels tremendously (polycount on models as well), but it doesn't seem impossible. ;D

Heh.. i wonder how long it will take it to get engines to that level. I mean really. To look photorealistic at realtime.

No time at all. As far as I know, the trouble now isn't so much the engines, but the artists.

Well, if you look at where we are versus where we were a decade ago, it's fair to surmise we'll be sitting pretty a decade from now.

The real question, however, is not how good the games will look, but what innovations will be created in the game play elements themselves, which really have been on the back burner since everyone decided to migrate to 3D. Once we reach a point where graphics can no longer (practically) improve, where do we go from there?

Actually i think the problem is that ... our computers are not fast enought to render photorealistic (Picture like professional 3d softare such as Lightwave, etc) in realtime. With dynamic lighting.

I think next we'll start seeing artist styles and new graphic ideas coming into the graphics. Once you have realism mastered you can start looking at surrealism and abstracting the graphics. Next thing we know we'll be back in 2D land.

Have you not played Half-Life 2? It's beautiful, not photorealisitc, but close, and it runs on a decent modern computer. And what you see in Half-Life 2 isn't all the Source engine can do. Wait til the real Half-Life 3 comes out.

I made a pixel shader that renders all the graphics as if they were on an old machine, 8-bits graphics and low resolution. Requires a new card ;D

Yay that's what the future'll look like:

A: "OMG! This game looks so totally cool and stuff. Like on those really old machines. Amiga and stuff."

B: "Yeah. They even have very low resolution and emulate 4 colours."

A: "Great. Oh darn. I just saw that my GFX card won't be good enough. Requires GeForce 17500 or Radeon 50000 to run smoothly."

Games could even let the players choose how they want to view them. Choosing between 8-bit emulation, green vector graphics and shiny subdivision surfaces could really make the game feel different. :) Of course the option would have to be limited to what the game makers want, lest their artistic vision be offended.

I think ICO (for the PS2) offered a possibility to, after beating the game, play it through again and have it look like an old film. I loved that game, perhaps I should try what it would look like that way...
