MageMog: You lived the United Arab Emirates or something, right? (I hope so, if I'm wrong and it's Finland or something then that's some real freaky weather )

How many of you have heard about the United Arab
Emirates, and actually know some stuff about it
more than the fact it sounds like an arab counrty. : /

Yes... I live here... For now...

nonnus to united arab emirates girl -
'Hey babe, how are you doing?'

girl -
'....'

nonnus -
'what do you say we go back to my place and give us a look under that shaw?"

girl -
'....'

Just then the door bust down and about thirty screaming sheiks storm in -
'Die American Scum!'

These are the things I think I know : the UAE is one of the more progressive (to tainted Western eyes such as mine) of the Arab countries, being democratic and has a functioning market economy. However it borders Saudi Arabia, which is friendly to Western regimes but the leadership there seems to preside over large variations in public opinion as a lot of Al-Qieda are recruited from Saudi. Also the UAE is probably the reason that when a random sample were asked, about 70% of Americans speculated that the United Kingdom (the joint group of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales as distinct from Great Britain which is a name that comes historically from the need to differentiate with what is now the Brittany region of France but was then an autonomous region and which refers to more or less the same area but notably without any of Ireland and probably not Scotland) was in the middle east.

Ummm, you can still get the BBC World Service in UAE on long wave I think, although possibly it is one of the areas which has been switched over to DAB only. Being near Qatar the most significant news channel is Al-Jazera, who I'm sure we all know very well indeed and on the topic of BBC'ness have recently signed a deal with the BBC for news resource sharing.

I'm going to go out on a limb (though not much of one) and guess that Mecca Cola will be available to you very soon indeed.

Well many moons ago I lived in Kuwait for a while... (Long before the Gulf War! ... Showing my age there :-/)

Thing I remember the most was the INSANE drivers!
I mean there were wrecked cars all over the place
We had an accident 5 minutes after leaving the airport on our first day there!!

and that Friday was a day off not weekends...

and at 6pm every night the prayers would blare out from the mosque on a PA system!

(I was only about 8 years old at the time!!!)

Well, I take it back, I've done some research and it seems that UAE is not democratic (I was imagining the emirates having a similar role to the remaining European royalty) but nevertheless do very well in terms of offering civil liberties and press freedom and use a secular interpretation of law.

Here's a UAE question : if there are many emirates, how do they decide who gets to go to the Arab League shindigs? Or do they just send an incredibly large party?
