I read in one of those mainstream science magazines (Scientific American or Disovery) that a brain surgeon recently found a cluster of brain cells that when stimulated actually triggers an out of body experience. The article said the area was on the surface of the brain above and behind the left ear. The article said it was likely that this part of the brain was responsible for integrating environment signals together into the conception of self and when its stimulated with an electric probe people feel like their floating above their bodies.

So, as long as you don't mind drilling a whole in your head and sticking a wire in there, you too can fly amongst the heavens.

On a related note (ie weird), has anyone seen the documentary about the young woman in the Norway (I think) that feel thru the ice into a stream and was frozen and clinically dead for something like 6 hours then revived? She fell in in such way that she was trapped beneath the ice and her companions couldn't get her out. She was positioned with her head toward the flow so her brain was "frozen" first then her body. More then a year later she still doesn't have full use of her extremities. But she is alive.

I just KNOW this is going to set off a holy war, but I can't NOT touch it.

I'm going to quote a line from The Matrix. "Mescaline. It's the only way to fly."

Want to go astral? Do drugs. Lots of them. Particularly hallucinogens. That's as close as you're going to get.

When I first read the topic I thought it was about crazy Israeli Goa-Trance groups ;)

Nothing wrong with sex or cursing, as long as they're done in appropriate company (someone you really know and trust, and people who don't mind, respectively); but seriously, don't do drugs. They may have some nice short-term effects, but they do permanent damage. They're addictive, and I understand getting off them is an absolute nightmare (sweating, shaking, etc.). I'm thankful never to have been subjected to anything like that myself.

I can't comment on the main topic of this post; I know absolutely nothing about it. But when I'm less tired, I shall certainly read up on it; I find this kind of thing interesting. Don't let the discussion dry up :)

... I can see that my point went by entirely unnoticed. What I meant to say was: "Drugs are the only thing capable of producing such an effect as the one you speak of, and it will be a hallucination in any case."

Flame on!

[Edit and side note]
I do not support using drugs of any form (except caffeine in limited amounts).

Actually the best astral projection method I ever found was the sunrise method (I believe its called). In fact researchers I think came up with a figure of about 70% success rate. If you don't project your bound to get a lucid dream.

You simple set your alarm for 2 hours before your waking time. Wake up and do anything for an hour that will really wake you up. (it doesnt even have to be an hour, as soon as you know your fully awake). Then, go back to your bed. Now you can try to relax and you will get much better results or if you just go straight back to bed there is a great chance you will have vivid dreams.

Magemog: Your problem sounds like your just going to have to practice more to overcome it. It's a very scary thing at first feeling what seems to be electrical energy pulsing throughout your body. But if you can get to this stage without problems I think you have climbed the hill and just have one little obstacle left before exploring the astral plane. Good luck!

The dreams I can believe in. Dreams happen during REM sleep, and for some reason, often when we go from sleep to being awake for a short while and then back to sleep again. I don't know why it doesn't happen when we fall asleep to begin with - perhaps the nerves involved shut down from exhaustion, preventing us from dreaming until we have recovered a bit. Sleeping will refresh us. If we then wake up, and then go back to sleep, we will enter REM sleep relaxed or envigorated enough to actually dream. Merely a theory. Dunno if it's true or anything.

I have experienced this myself on several occasions when waking up at 4 in the morning and going back to sleep.

Of course, since this topic is already going off-topic (estimated time to flame war: 4 posts), I'll go and add that not all hallucinogenic drugs are addictive. Psilocybin (and its derivative, psilocin) is one such example, and its toxicity is so low that it is nigh impossible to die from an overdose (LD50 is 280 mg/kg, while the effective dose is about 0.02mg/kg: compare it with caffeine that has an LD50 of 150mg/kg and an effective dose that is about 10 times higher)... but then of course, some of the mushrooms that people eat because they contain the drug are pretty toxic because they also contain other substances, and with all hallucinogens there is a risk of a "bad trip" that can f*ck you up pretty good (drug-induced psychosis). So don't try this at home kids... :)

Note: I've never tried any drugs myself; all of the above information is collected from respected sources on the 'net (official toxicology studies from various universities).

Ooo, excerpts from "The Library" by "Swedish Infomania" - the standard Swedish underground chemistry reference since 1994 ;D

Normally, those sorts of texts aren't to be trusted - the people who write them seem to be trying to blow their hands off and/or overdose on strange stuff trying to get high, but that particular library has a much better scientific background than most (in fact all) "fun-but-mostly-illegal stuff you can do with simple household chemicals" that I've read. Included book sources, chemical structures and reaction paths for almost everything...

gah.. just posting because I hate the myths people tell about drugs. Like in that movie traffic, the chic smokes one hit and suddenly she's a "junkie". Or the way minor drug users are vilified by the media as evil criminals. And the US's "drug war" which just entrenches poverty and crime. Gimme a break.

Ecstasy is safe (just dont mix it with antidepressants), pot is okay if you avoid bongs and stick with jays (then its not too much different from smoking) and as gnolam said mushrooms are fine. I would also say that if you're with trusted friends and there's a good vibe, acid isn't as bad as people make out. It's also unheard of to overdose on LSD (you just have a really looooong trip).

Whatever you do avoid speed (particularly ice) and anything harder of course. If you take speed there's a very high chance you'll end up restrained in a psych ward...

Of course dont do anything your state/country prohibits...but why are harmless, soft, mind opening drugs illegal in the first place? Fear, ignorance and vested interests. Smoking or binge drinking, they're just as dangerous and cause a lot more damage, but they are legal.

EEP!!! that entire message should be ingnored by everyone... just reading it may make you think
that there is somthing to using mind altering
drugs... BAD all bad, every drug is bad,
with the exception of course when they
are needed to prolong your life span.

so how about it... I REALLY WANNA ASTRALLY PROJECT!!!

I'm too lazy to check back, but thanks to
whoever suggested I wake two hours beforehand.
I knew that worked, but forgot it for some reason
(that was back when I only knew about lucid
dreaming) I think I'll try that the next
time I get a chance (about 8 tests this week : /)

X-G, what about the CIA using Remote Viewing in the 70's? Although it's possible to guess the location of a downed plane in Africa or what a never visited site in the Soviet Union looks like the odds must be small.

Even scientists are starting to explore the possibilities of other dimensions existing now that before people like you would scoff at.

Even if you don't agree with the link to parkinson's it does bear thinking about. I personally think ALL drugs change the brain chemistry, so nothing is 'safe'.

Mage: Document is unaccessible. And even so, is it by any kind of authority? I stand skeptical to most "independent" observations or experiments.
