I graduated to Freecell after I got bored of Solitaire and MineSweeper. Now there are no (non-Allegro) games on here; too much of a distraction. I was still living with a roommate when I deleted that stuff; boy was he pissed (like I cared, it's my box -- |

I rather like the games that come with WinXp As mentioned a thousand times in that thread in game development.... I really hate how you gotta wait for them to make their move sometimes.. heh.. I wish I could just go 4 times in a row if they took too long "He who controls the stuffing controls the Universe" |

Clearly Roger doesn't know the difference between checkboxes and radio buttons. Anyway I thought he'd already downloaded that stuff. I didn't reply. Roger also contacted my brother on Yahoo Messenger. He "might be comeing up november". He "dono yet". Thank God I'll be in Cambridge then. Quote:

Butting Alleg in the lib has gotta hurt... (He means add 'alleg' to the list of libraries.) There we go, a little bit of research and everything's working! Geez, I directed him to the FAQ earlier - how long did it take him to find the answer in there? That guy should NOT be a coder. And for your entertainment, regarding the abomination that is ":>" -

Aug 09 23:13:47 <x_darkdud> virus scanners
Aug 09 23:14:05 <entheh> port scanners eh?
Aug 09 23:14:08 <x_darkdud> Raw data tools
Aug 09 23:14:11 <x_darkdud> yup
Aug 09 23:14:27 <entheh> firewalls, virus scanners and the other thing sound as if they're for protection
Aug 09 23:14:34 <entheh> port scanners are designed to help you hack into a system
Aug 09 23:14:39 <entheh> how do you explain that?
Aug 09 23:14:49 <x_darkdud> not allways
Aug 09 23:15:03 <x_darkdud> you can scann your self to see what ports are open on your system
Aug 09 23:15:20 <entheh> ok
48. o O ( *cough* right. )
Aug 09 23:16:34 <x_darkdud> ya now on djgpp
Aug 09 23:16:46 <entheh> yeah, but I use MinGW too
Aug 09 23:16:47 <x_darkdud> to run a midi file its like this right?
Aug 09 23:16:51 <x_darkdud> install_sound(DIGI_AUTODETECT, MIDI_AUTODETECT, );
Aug 09 23:16:55 <x_darkdud> opps
Aug 09 23:17:02 <entheh> you need to put a 0 or a NULL in for the last parameter
Aug 09 23:17:03 <x_darkdud> install_sound(DIGI_AUTODETECT, MIDI_AUTODETECT, 0);
Aug 09 23:17:05 <entheh> yeah
Aug 09 23:17:13 <x_darkdud> would this work as well
Aug 09 23:17:21 <x_darkdud> install_sound(DIGI_AUTODETECT, MIDI_AUTODETECT, NULL);
Aug 09 23:17:29 <entheh> yep
Aug 09 23:17:38 <x_darkdud> cos its not playing the midi file
Aug 09 23:17:58 <entheh> what else did you add?
Aug 09 23:18:04 <x_darkdud> nothing
63. o O ( gah! )
Aug 09 23:18:17 <entheh> no load_midi()? play_midi()/
Aug 09 23:18:20 <entheh> destroy_midi()?
Aug 09 23:18:27 <entheh> and you expect it to play?
Aug 09 23:18:27 <entheh> :P
Aug 09 23:18:29 <x_darkdud> so its like
Aug 09 23:19:17 <x_darkdud> mainsound = load_midi(d:/a.mid");
Aug 09 23:19:38 <entheh> no - put the midi file inside your firstgame folder
Aug 09 23:19:47 <entheh> then just use "a.mid"
Aug 09 23:19:54 <x_darkdud> i did
Aug 09 23:20:06 <entheh> then why the d:/ in there?
Aug 09 23:20:10 <x_darkdud> then i make a sound folder
Aug 09 23:20:13 <x_darkdud> just ex
Aug 09 23:20:17 <x_darkdud> ii put
Aug 09 23:20:21 <x_darkdud> sound/a.mid
Aug 09 23:20:24 <entheh> ok
Aug 09 23:20:32 <x_darkdud> and it did not work
Aug 09 23:20:45 <entheh> what didn't work?
Aug 09 23:20:54 <x_darkdud> it did not play the midi file
Aug 09 23:21:02 <entheh> ok, so it did compile and link?
Aug 09 23:21:07 <x_darkdud> yup
Aug 09 23:21:14 <entheh> you forgot something
Aug 09 23:21:17 <x_darkdud> no erorrs or warnings
Aug 09 23:21:17 <entheh> and it's in the docs
Aug 09 23:21:22 <entheh> you've loaded the file
Aug 09 23:21:25 <entheh> you haven't told it to play yet
Aug 09 23:21:37 <x_darkdud> havent i
Aug 09 23:21:38 <entheh> I'm not gonna give you the code - you need to look through the
docs and find out what to do
Aug 09 23:21:44 <x_darkdud> lol
Aug 09 23:21:52 <x_darkdud> ah
Aug 09 23:21:55 <x_darkdud> would this work
Aug 09 23:22:25 <x_darkdud> install_sound(DIGI_AUTODETECT, MIDI_AUTODETECT, NULL);
Aug 09 23:22:29 <x_darkdud> opps
Aug 09 23:22:35 <x_darkdud> wait 1 min
Aug 09 23:23:15 <entheh> RHIDE has a 'copy to windows clipboard' option in the Edit menu
Aug 09 23:24:01 <x_darkdud> if (mainsound) play_sample(mainsound, 255, 128, 1000, 1);
100. o O ( /me rolls eyes )
Aug 09 23:24:27 <entheh> try it
Aug 09 23:24:27 <x_darkdud> would that play it
Aug 09 23:24:29 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 09 23:24:33 <x_darkdud> 1min
Aug 09 23:25:45 <x_darkdud> it dose not work
Aug 09 23:25:57 <entheh> exactly as I expected
Aug 09 23:26:00 <x_darkdud> o
Aug 09 23:26:03 <entheh> MIDI and SAMPLE aren't the same thing
Aug 09 23:26:09 <entheh> look through the docs for another function
Aug 09 23:26:20 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 09 23:26:52 <x_darkdud> umm
Aug 09 23:27:05 <x_darkdud> how about this
Aug 09 23:29:10 <x_darkdud> mainsound = play_midi(mainsound, 255, 128 , 1000, 1);
114. o O ( nnngh!!! )
Aug 09 23:29:21 <entheh> try it
Aug 09 23:29:26 <x_darkdud> lol
Aug 09 23:29:27 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 09 23:30:22 <x_darkdud> nope i got load of erros
Aug 09 23:30:27 <x_darkdud> it did not like it
Aug 09 23:30:35 <entheh> thought so
121. o O ( ha! )
Aug 09 23:30:42 <entheh> now look up play_midi and find out what parameters it takes
Aug 09 23:30:59 <x_darkdud> its weard tho
Aug 09 23:31:02 <x_darkdud> i dont get it
Aug 09 23:31:08 <entheh> makes perfect sense to me
Aug 09 23:32:05 <x_darkdud> int play_midi(MIDI *midi, int loop);
Aug 09 23:32:10 <x_darkdud> i do not get that
Aug 09 23:32:12 <x_darkdud> lol
Aug 09 23:32:17 <entheh> ok
Aug 09 23:32:36 <entheh> you've got a variable that matches the first parameter
Aug 09 23:32:39 <entheh> it's: MIDI *mainsound;
Aug 09 23:32:44 <entheh> so you can pass 'mainsound' there
Aug 09 23:32:56 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 09 23:32:57 <x_darkdud> like
Aug 09 23:32:58 <entheh> if you read the docs, it'll tell you how 'loop' works
Aug 09 23:33:09 <entheh> 'int loop' means it expects you to pass an int there
Aug 09 23:33:15 <entheh> a number can be an int
Aug 09 23:33:26 <x_darkdud> o
Aug 09 23:33:42 <entheh> but you need to read the docs to find out what the number means
Aug 09 23:33:50 <x_darkdud> plz dude
Aug 09 23:34:08 <x_darkdud> i have not been doing it for long
Aug 09 23:34:25 <x_darkdud> can you plz just give me the code plz :(
Aug 09 23:34:27 <entheh> "If the loop flag is set"
Aug 09 23:34:29 <entheh> from the docs
Aug 09 23:34:31 <entheh> right
Aug 09 23:34:38 <x_darkdud> flag?
Aug 09 23:34:38 <entheh> a 'flag' is a true or false value
Aug 09 23:34:42 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 09 23:34:43 <entheh> 0 means false
Aug 09 23:34:49 <entheh> any other number (usually 1 though) means true
Aug 09 23:35:02 <entheh> set = true
Aug 09 23:35:06 <entheh> you should be able to do it now
Aug 09 23:35:07 <x_darkdud> so its like
Aug 09 23:35:27 <x_darkdud> play_midi(mainsound , 1);
Aug 09 23:35:29 <x_darkdud> that is not it
Aug 09 23:35:38 <x_darkdud> thats just stupid
157. o O ( ugh... )
Aug 09 23:35:45 <entheh> why is it stupid?
Aug 09 23:35:48 <entheh> have you even tried it yet?
Aug 09 23:35:59 <x_darkdud> not yet
Aug 09 23:36:06 <entheh> tell me, why is it stupid?
Aug 09 23:36:29 <x_darkdud> it just dont look right at all
Aug 09 23:36:43 <entheh> how do you know? you haven't been doing it for long
Aug 09 23:36:44 <entheh> :P
Aug 09 23:36:52 <x_darkdud> lol
166. o O ( stop saying lol, it's not funny it's bloody annoying! )
Aug 09 23:36:58 <x_darkdud> can you plz just tell em the code
Aug 09 23:37:01 <x_darkdud> plz
Aug 09 23:37:04 <x_darkdud> :D
Aug 09 23:37:06 <entheh> grrrrrr
Aug 09 23:37:09 <entheh> just TRY IT
Aug 09 23:37:09 <x_darkdud> lol
173. o O ( AAAARGH! )
Aug 09 23:37:14 <x_darkdud> i will try it
Aug 09 23:39:12 <x_darkdud> it did not work
Aug 09 23:39:18 <x_darkdud> i got a warning
Aug 09 23:39:25 <entheh> what warning did you get?
Aug 09 23:39:31 <entheh> quote it please
Aug 09 23:39:37 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 09 23:40:22 <x_darkdud> passing arg 1 og 'play_midi' form incompleate pointer type
181. o O ( nice quote )
Aug 09 23:40:27 <x_darkdud> this is what i put
Aug 09 23:40:28 <x_darkdud> if (mainsound) play_midi(mainsound , 1);
Aug 09 23:40:46 <entheh> in that case you should have got a warning on the load_midi line too
Aug 09 23:41:22 <entheh> let's see your load_midi line plz
Aug 09 23:41:31 <x_darkdud> load
Aug 09 23:41:32 <x_darkdud> i got
Aug 09 23:41:49 <x_darkdud> this is what i got for main sound
Aug 09 23:41:53 <x_darkdud> mainsound = load_sample("a.mid");
190. o O ( not very thorough, are we )
Aug 09 23:42:04 <entheh> a.mid isn't a sample
Aug 09 23:42:05 <x_darkdud> no load midi
Aug 09 23:42:08 <entheh> you shouldn't be using load_sample on it
Aug 09 23:42:10 <entheh> it'll fail
Aug 09 23:42:18 <entheh> look for a function other than load_sample
Aug 09 23:42:21 <entheh> you should be able to guess the name
Aug 09 23:42:22 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 09 23:42:29 <x_darkdud> so its like
Aug 09 23:42:35 <x_darkdud> mainsound = load_midi("a.mid");
Aug 09 23:42:40 <entheh> try it
Aug 09 23:42:43 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 09 23:45:53 <x_darkdud> i got warning on]
Aug 09 23:46:05 <x_darkdud> mainsound = load_sample("a.mid");
Aug 09 23:46:08 <x_darkdud> it says
Aug 09 23:46:35 <x_darkdud> assignment incompatible pointer type
206. o O ( ah, he's learnt to spell 'incompatible'! )
Aug 09 23:46:45 <entheh> JUST as I expected :P
208. o O ( HA!! )
Aug 09 23:46:51 <x_darkdud> lol
210. o O ( grr... )

Aug 09 23:47:01 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 09 23:47:02 <entheh> note that it says:
Aug 09 23:47:14 <entheh> MIDI *load_midi(const char *filename);
Aug 09 23:47:22 <entheh> the MIDI * is the important bit
Aug 09 23:47:26 <entheh> your variable must much
Aug 09 23:47:28 <entheh> uh
Aug 09 23:47:30 <entheh> your variable must match
Aug 09 23:47:33 <entheh> so change
Aug 09 23:47:35 <x_darkdud> the MIDI is = to mainsound?
221. o O ( Please to beink askink questions coherently. )
Aug 09 23:47:38 <entheh> SAMPLE *mainsound;

Aug 09 23:50:48 <entheh> MIDI *load_midi(const char *filename); <-- this says that load_midi returns MIDI *
Aug 09 23:50:56 <entheh> so your variable must be a MIDI *
Aug 09 23:50:59 <entheh> now do you know what to put?
Aug 09 23:51:31 <x_darkdud> my head dude i have only been doing C\C++ for about 2 week
Aug 09 23:51:35 <x_darkdud> lol

Aug 09 23:53:02 <x_darkdud> static MIDI *mainsound;
241. o O ( I told him to make all the variables static when I was writing the code for him. )
Aug 09 23:53:08 <entheh> ok
Aug 09 23:53:09 <entheh> now try it
Aug 09 23:54:18 <x_darkdud> i should change this shouldnt i
Aug 09 23:54:21 <x_darkdud> if (mainsound) play_midi(mainsound, 255, 128, 1000, 0);
Aug 09 23:54:37 <x_darkdud> too many arguments to function
247. o O ( trust your teacher you dimwit )

Aug 09 23:57:08 <x_darkdud> but it still not work
Aug 09 23:57:24 <entheh> in that case maybe you can't get MIDI on DOS
Aug 09 23:57:35 <entheh> send me the .c file if you like - I'll test it for you
Aug 09 23:57:41 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 09 23:57:52 <entheh> actually zip it all up for me

Aug 10 00:08:49 <x_darkdud> so iys
Aug 10 00:09:20 <x_darkdud> so its dcc C:\game.zip

I looked through his code. Everything seemed to be in order.
Then I ran the thing. The MIDI worked. Ripped from somewhere, of course (it's either
in Secret of Mana or it's been used in Fenix Blade).

There was a human reproductive organ protruding from one of the characters' foreheads.

Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> Allegro 4.0.2 - July 3rd, 2002
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> MSVC Package, Distributed by Allegro.cc
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> * SETUP *
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> To install, just click on the install.bat file.
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> If that does not work, then you will need to copy the 'include' and 'lib'
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> folders to your 'VC98' folder. The three DLLs will need to be copied to
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> your Windows system folder.
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> * HOW TO USE *
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> Read this document:
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> http://www.allegro.cc/docs/windows-msvc-use.html
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> It really does tell you how to use Allegro with MSVC.

Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> is the nicest.
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> Download the example files from www.allegro.cc if you want to see how to
Aug 10 00:21:03 <x_darkdud> do a lot of cool stuff with Allegro.
Aug 10 00:21:18 <entheh> yes
Aug 10 00:21:20 <entheh> just as I thought
Aug 10 00:21:22 <x_darkdud> ok
Aug 10 00:21:34 <entheh> "you will need to copy the 'include' and 'lib' folders to your

It was tough enough reading that, congrats on being able to continue the conversation. I had a friend who sat next to me in programming class. He's a good friend who was in programming with me since grade 10, and he usually got it ok, but by grade 12, it all seemed to be over his head. So throughout almost the whole year I spent more time helping him with his projects than I spent on mine (it was ok because I usually got the projects done early, the class was REALLY easy). At first I wanted him to figure it out for himself, but by the end of the year I would just take the keyboard and do it for him. It saved me a lot of time |
