Icy Tower 1.4 out now!
Johan Peitz

Hello everybody!

Long time ago I use to be a regular at allegro.cc but when I coded less and less c/c++ I became inactive. Nowadays I do almost all my game programming in AS3, but recently I returned to my roots to make another Allegro project!

Some of you might remember the old game Icy Tower and we've dusted it off and given it new shiny clothes and several other improvements. So I'm very happy to return here and tell you that a new version of Icy Tower has been released!

Have fun!

I got the game last night. It has a nice page with lots of stats now, so the old score/floor/combo stats are just a tiny part of all the things you can try to beat.

Also, I can report that the game works in wine. So all of us Linux ppl can enjoy it.

Dizzy Egg

Johan! Surely being such an 'early' member of Allegro you won't forget the ol' X-G classic; NO SCREENSHOT NO DOWNLOAD!

Very nice btw.

Timorg

When you have been around that long, you get a free pass. If someone is here and doesn't know what Icy Tower is, they have been living a very sheltered life, and really need to download and play it.

It's been a long time since I played that game :)
Cool that it got an update after such a long break.
Will test it later when I'm at home.

Jonatan Hedborg

Awesome! Will try it when I get home to my PC (unless you have a mac binary lying around somewhere...?) :)

This is Johan Peitz we're talking about. If he puts something up for download, it's worth it to have a look at it. He doesn't need to put up a screenshot.

Trezker

That may be true for all us old geezers that know who Peitz is.
But a good screenshot is still a good idea if you consider the ignorant newbies who never heard of his previous work.

GullRaDriel

What Trezker said, plus I will test it right after I will be back @home !

Edit: Ho, yeah, and I offer to Johan a part of my free time if he ever want someone to make a linux build !

CGamesPlay

I hope the irony of the Free Lunch Design Web Toolbar isn't lost on anyone.

I like the new stats; it's definitely an improvement to the old Icy Tower :)

kazzmir

I got like 3000 points.

Anyway, I played the game in wine and I got an error about not being able to save the replay after I died. I think my wine configuration emulates XP or 2000. Where are you trying to save the game to?

GClaudiu

One word, "Sweet!". I remember playing the old version for a while, but this one is great. I love the new graphics, as well as the profile system and replays. Nice work!

Current rank D ;)
Still practicing!

The rank system is motivating :D

I intended to play until I got "You've got to be kidding me!" (no way!), but once I got that I decided that I'd better keep playing to get rank A. I like the profile thing, but I've already had more than enough reminders to get Icy Tower for my mobile phone. The endless advertising is almost enough to make my go back to 1.3. -- or edit the exe to change the messages.

Incidentally, I never managed to get to floor 400 for rank A. I got to 380 twice though. I'm pleased that 'the worm' still works as a playable character in the new version.

-edit-
I almost forgot, one of the in game messages says "Bounce on the walls to maintin your speed!" - small spelling mistake.

Johan Peitz

Thanks for the kind words and feedback!

The profiles and replays are saved in a subdirectory to where the game is installed. Others have managed to get in running under wine so it should be doable.

As for the toolbar and the mobile game. I use the toolbar personally and I think it's great. For people that are interested in FLD it's a great way to be in touch with the community as it can be updated in real time. On the other hand, I fully understand that it might look bad it some people's eyes, but in this case the good outweighs the bad. And the mobile game, well - we just want to spread the love. :D

Dizzy Egg

Apologies Johan! Had I known the legacy you carry around here I would not have been so abrupt in NSND tactics!

GullRaDriel

Don't worry. Johan is just tracing your ip to your home and aiming his nuclear weapons on it.
;D

Dizzy Egg

Someone needs to :-/

Timorg

aiming his nuclear weapons on it.

Why use nukes, when you can just send herds of bouncing elephants to crush them from above.

Schyfis

I used to play this with my cousin all the time back in the day.
I never knew it was made with Allegro until I found it in the depot! I'll definitely give the new version a try.

Samuel Henderson

I remember playing this all the time back in high school. I was shocked when I opened the folder and saw the allegro dll in there :)

X-G

Hey, when are we going to have that lunch anyway?

Trent Gamblin

I liked this game when I played it before. It looks even better now, but running on a mac under vmware fusion I don't get any sound or music, which makes it kind of a disappointment.

CGamesPlay

I have to say, I love the new automatic replay management. Noteworthy replays are automatically saved. Greatness :)

Simon Parzer

I like the new graphics, the colors are more pleasant to the eye I think.
One thing bothers me, though:
{"name":"598730","src":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/2\/c\/2c9c7edfc9222730b1beb9671ade7ed2.png","w":642,"h":504,"tn":"\/\/djungxnpq2nug.cloudfront.net\/image\/cache\/2\/c\/2c9c7edfc9222730b1beb9671ade7ed2"}598730
See the red arrow? That's where the parallax scrolling is broken - IMO the sky/clouds have to scroll way slower than the wall.

I use the toolbar personally and I think it's great.

Come on... seriously? ::)

Arthur Kalliokoski

I can't Cntl-Alt-End for a quick exit >:(

Trezker

Yeah, two things are really too slow in this game.
Starting a new game, I think it should start a new game directly, as soon as you press enter after you fall. As it is now I press enter on average 3 times before a new game starts.

Secondly as mentioned, it takes way to long to quit. So long you even have to time regret your decision before it shuts down. There should be an instant shutdown button.
