At the beginning of the year, I set a goal on Wii Fit to get under 200 lbs (90.72kg) by June 16th (my birthday). My weight at that time was 212 lbs (96.16kg). My current weight is 222 lbs (100.7kg). Thanks Wii Fit.
Honestly, I haven't tried hard enough. I've logged maybe 20 workouts (it says I've worked over 10 hours and I do 30 minute sessions) on Wii Fit and I haven't changed my diet at all. Plus I tend to be sleeping more than bears these days.
I'm hoping announcing my goals here will make them a bit more real; hoping it will make me try harder. Matthew's inevitable cynical comment can only fuel my spite! I'm going to go on a real diet and try to excerise twice a day, maybe even three times (morning lap around the neighborhood, wii fit exercise before lunch, three laps in the evening (that's roughly 2 miles)). And of course, adding piccolo push-ups before and after I sleep.
And, to truly aid my psyche going into this, I ate a large meal from McDonalds (intending to make myself sick so I don't want anymore fast food): a small fry, a large fry, six chicken nuggets, a double-quarter pounder with cheese, an extra large Coke and a Rolling Rock beer. All before the second commercial break in a recorded "The Office". No more pigging out for a while.

I've been eating healthier for about a month now, and I've begun exercising regularly in the last week or so. Just some push-ups and crunches, but better than the nothing I used to do.
Combined with walking up The Hill here on campus, I get an above-average amount of exercise per day.

Would have the opposite effect on me. Eating junk food often makes me happier.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when my wife doesn't finish all of her food for a meal (she never finishes it all). One of her biggest pet peeves is how I always eat whatever she doesn't eat. "But I can't just put it in the trashcan, that's just selfish!"
Sounds like it might just be easier for you to gain some height. 6'8" would be a good height for your weight. Wii Fit will get you into shape as well as Guitar Hero will help you play the guitar.
First step is to cut all fast food and soda pop (or "coke" down South ). All of it! Just don't eat that crap. Seriously. It's the easiest change to make. If you cannot do it, you are a weak minded fool who deserves to be fat.
Instead of sleeping, go out jogging. It's easy to fall into the trap of sleeping when you've got nothing to do. Do not let yourself nap! It's just your bored, depressed inner self talking. Buy a basketball and find a hoop; that's another easy way to pass time while getting some exercise.
Come back when you've mastered those two steps, and I'll raise your experience level.

The only thing that matters is energy in < energy out. However you structure your diet to accomplish that doesn't matter one bit.
When you do the groceries, avoid all the aisles in the middle of the store. I shop almost exclusively on the sides where they keep the fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy. Not only are you paying less for your food but you will find that there is nothing to snack on except for the healthy stuff you've bought. And as Leverton says, stop eating out!
I exercise 3 times a week and I alternate between cardio and weights, this keeps your body from getting used to routine and thus the weight leveling off after a while.
I also don't eat after 6 pm, which is the time around which everyone kinda sits around at the computer/tv and besides you will be going to bed shortly after. That means that your body is just storing the food that you eat around this time. If you get hungry, eat raw green vegetables and drink herbal tea.

Old wives tale. It's the total number of calories you eat over a day, not when you eat, that determines your weight.
I've tried both methods. The results my body show speak for themselves.
I was around 260lbs at the start of this year. My doctor told me to try eating things that have a low glycemic index. I've been doing that, and getting out for a couple walks a day. So far it's working out pretty good... I'm down about 20-25lbs and hopefully will keep dropping pounds until I get around 160-180.
you also have to watch your sugur intake and stress levels.
i have full control over both. you mite want to do some type of marshal art meditation to deal with stress. to deal with your surge levels try dring and eating things that are bitter.
when you get use to the bitter ness the other stuff will be too sweet.
note: you wont beable to do piccolo push-ups right away. so just stay up as long as you can in the position. your arms will get stronger. if you want to speed it up use some type of wethigh when you in the position. than try do it with out the weight you will feel a lot lighhter and beable to do one or so.
remeber at first you will be only be able to do one. so dont stop training because you dont thing you can do them.

Certainly change your diet. Change your excecise routine as well. If you gained weight, that means something is not working. Also change your avatar. A picture showing the unwanted you would be a good motivation tool. Send your story to Nintendo with a couple of pictures. I'm sure they would like to know how effective thier equipment is.
Don't do "weight loss diets". They don't actually help. Sure, they'll make you lose weight, but once you stop, you go back up to your previous weight again in no time.
Don't exercise to lose weight. That's not to say that you shouldn't exercise (you should get some exercise, try walking or cycling instead of taking a car now and then), but you shouldn't do it in order to lose weight. Also, muscle weighs more than fat, so although you may get slimmer, you won't necessarily get lighter.
The really really important thing is to eat healthy. Cut the sugar (which isn't easy, almost everything you an get in the US has sugar added). Eat more fruit and vegetables (fruit is mostly sugar too, so don't eat too much; fibre is good though). Cut the snacks. Eat normal sized portions (the standard portion size in the US is ridiculously huge, I don't know if it's just restaurants or a general cultural thing, so I may be extrapolating unreasonably here). Use basic ingredients without additives to prepare your food (my experience is that these are actually somewhat hard to get/expensive in the US). Avoid pre-cooked meals (they contain too much junk).
In other words, adopt a healthy lifestyle. Once that's in place, your weight should tend to go to its "healthy" or natural value. Then you can help it get there by burning more calories by working out. Address the cause, not the symptoms.

You'd think that, but it's not true. I could speculate that your body is not using the energy you get from the food immediately and stores it for later use (ie, fat), but during a normal day your body doesn't start using that stored energy, or not using it efficiently, but I don't actually know the reason. I do know (not from personal experience, but from the experience of people close to me) that eating less does not automatically make you lose weight.
That's another part of a healthy diet: eat regularly and don't eat too late.
I find that people are sorely mistaken about serving sizes. I'd sure like to know what the "ideal" serving sizes are configured for. Everybody's different and how much fuel you burn will have a direct effect on how much you need to consume. I'm assuming that the conventional "healthy" serving sizes are for people with uber healthy lifestyles; that exercise regularly, etc. Since that's almost nobody, the average individual should be eating considerably less than that, IMHO.
Whenever people see how much I eat they freak out because "I need to eat more." orly? Then why am I at a healthy weight and you're struggling with yours? Eating is primarily about survival. Fueling your body to do the things you need to do. It's nice if you can enjoy what you eat, but you should be eating to survive. It's OK to stop eating before you're full. We're capable of eating more for survival, for example, if find yourself lost in the wilderness somewhere unsure when your next meal will be, but we don't need to do so 3 times a day in order to survive or be healthy.
I never eat breakfast (I often have a bottle of Gatorade or a can of Dr. Pepper in the morning at work though). For lunch, I always get fast food: usually a Big Mac meal at McDonald's or Double-Burger combo at Wendy's or similar. I never "super-size" anything. The meals they give you should be plenty to survive on and truly this is the meal that primarily fuels me right now. I can eat a Double Big Mac meal, but rarely get it because that much isn't needed (by rarely I mean like 2% of the time). It's like gnolam said: input < output (or in my case, input ~= output). I barely eat anything for supper most of the time. There are some days that I don't eat anything all day. I'm a picky eater and predominantly only eat things I like.
I'm not claiming my diet to be healthy, but it's all I need to sustain myself with my current lifestyle (i.e., all I need to survive). There are definitely different things I could eat to improve my health a lot, and if my lifestyle became more active I would find myself eating more, but as is I can easily get by with one average sized meal for lunch plus whatever little bit more I happen to have for supper a day. And as I said, there are days I can go without eating no problem.
I maintain a weight of approximately 125 lbs with basically no conscious effort. I'm approximately 5'9" (175 cm).
Oh, and that's one more thing: except for cold hard scientific facts, don't believe a single word anyone says. Their experiences apply only to them and not you.

That being said, I had my wife kick me out of bed this morning before she went to sleep (she works the night shift). Did 10 push-ups, 10 crunches and then jogged a lap around the neighborhood. I would love to go back to bed right now, but I need to work on something. I plan on using the Wii Fit for an exercise before lunch (probably aerobics + yoga).
I dropped about 50lbs since summer, and I have a goal similar to yours, only the last 20 to go now, but I find I don't do as well when I'm stressed (exam time now), so lately it hasn't worked so well.

I'm sorry to hear that, at a weight of 89.x kg I'm not the slimmest person either, but while I don't do much about it I'm not really bothered either, I have other things to worry about.
What I said erlier was more like a guideline from someone who's never really been there and done that but has seen many other try and fail, and from what I can gather, loosing weight naturally by working out is the best way, but of course avoid eating more than enought is a good idea too, but I don't wanna!
I hope you find more motivation to work out.

Why is this constantly being recommended? If you're lifting weights you're probably looking to gain weight. If you want to lose weight then high cardio activities such as running or swimming are a lot more efficient. Yes you can lose weight by lifting weights, but if that's all you're planning on doing then it won't be the most effective method.
Perhaps the term "lose weight" should be replaced by "not be such a flabby slob"

Running is a bad way to loose weight if you're (much) too heavy (but it's a good way to stay in shape) because it will mess up your knees. That's the problem with many of these type of exercise.
Pick up swimming instead.
Swimming is also good because you use more groups of muscles than you do with weights.
EDIT: cycling would also avoid the problem of screwing up your knees.
