Am I right or what?
[edit] I changed some titles to their english names. Others I deleted as I couldn't find the name except in Swedish.
So what's your user name?
It's "kent.larsson". Are you a memeber as well? (And what's your username?)
What the fuck is so special about Napolean Dynamite? I watched it and couldn't stand it. My top would be the Back To The Future trilogy, Terminator/Terminator 2, and Alien/Aliens. Jurrasic Park was good, too bad they screwed the other two up, same with Alien III and Resurection.
My most favourite movies are:
Blade Runner
Alien
Pulp Fiction
Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
Dune
Matrix
Here's how I would have rated those movies:

- denotes I haven't seen the movie.
denotes that the film would have got a 1 or lower had it not looked so pretty.
My favs (the ones I can currently remember, because the DVDs sit on my shelf):
The Omega Man, 1971, Charlton Heston Soylent Green, 1973, Charlton Heston Das Boot, 1981/1997(director's cut), Prochnow, Ochsenknecht, Grönemeyer, Semmelrogge Dune, ?, KyleMacLachlan, Sting, Patrick Stewart WarGames, 1983, Matthew Broderick Tron, ?/2002(deluxe edition), ? Sneakers, 1992, Robert Redford, Dan Akroyd 23, ?, August Diehl, Fabian Busch(not related), Dieter Landuris
Movies that I have in good memory (they are a bit trashy but I sometimes enjoy that):
The Ninja Turtles, Karate Kid, Karate Tiger, Bloodsport, The Goonies, E.T., Spaceballs, Star Wars (the old trilogy), Kolossus
It's "kent.larsson". Are you a memeber as well? (And what's your username?)
Proud member since '04.
The username should be easy to guess.
Other movies I would give a 5 to are: Apocalypse Now, Pi, Man Bites Dog, Brazil, Delicatessin, Betty Blue, Platoon, Harold and Maude, The Big Sleep, Easy Rider, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi Driver.
edit: Oh and Dark City. It kicked The Matrix's ass.
Oh and Dark City. It kicked The Matrix's .
Dark City was alright.
Dark City was alright.
More story, and less action, is always a big ++ in my book.
The username should be easy to guess.
You're now my friend!
Man, I really liked Kung-Fu Hustle, guess I'm gonna watch it again right now.
That's what I call a "3615 MyLife" Thread ;-p
Beavis and Butthead do America.
The lord of the rings trilogy
Mists of avalon
The name of the rose
Indiana jones
Wargames
Some of the films I saw recently (and not so recently) that were good enough to remember:
Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino)
Blade Runner (Ridley Scott)
Aliens (all of them) (Ridley Scott)
The Sixth Sense (M. Night Shyamalan) and also everything else by Shyamalan (Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, haven't seen the latest one yet)
almost everything (that I've seen) by Luc Besson (Nikita, Leon, 5th element, Taxi etc.)
many films by Hitchcock (Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho, etc.)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind (Michael Gondry) (best film made in this century so far)
Da-Vinci Code 5/5?! You have to be kidding me. It wasn't nescessarily "bad", but I wouldn't consider it good by a long shot. Then again, the book wasn't great either.
Not too long ago, there was a vote here for "best movie of all time" and people picked "Lord of the Rings", which was definately sad.
As for my personal list of favorites, I suck at making those. Amelie, The Sixth Sense, Dogville, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Others would be on there, probably more I can't think of right now.
That's what I call a "3615 MyLife" Thread ;-p
That's what I call a post I can't understand. Please elaborate.
The lord of the rings trilogy
I like them too.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind
It's a great movie. Nice to see a new side of Jim Carrey.
Da-Vinci Code 5/5?! You have to be kidding me.
It might be 4/5. Perhaps it helped that I haven't read the book.
Amelie
I turned it off after 15 minutes.
Soylent Green
Soylent Green is people!
No love for the classics?
I turned it off after 15 minutes.
Fair enough! It's probably not your type of movie if you give the Da Vinci Code 4/5.
Oh, forgot to mention "A Beautiful Mind", which I thought was a rather good movie too.
EDIT: The problem with classics is, there's so many of them!
Oh, forgot to mention "A Beautiful Mind", which I thought was a rather good movie too.
Except for all the bullshit they added!
It's a great movie. Nice to see a new side of Jim Carrey.
I saw it (by chance) on TV about a year ago. On the TV schedule page they wrote it was a comedy.
I forgot to mention The Dinner Guest, The Closet, The Day of the Beast, and The Idiots.
Most of my favourite films aren't even English speaking films. I need to start learning French, German and Spanish, so I can enjoy them without subtitles.
Most of my favourite films aren't even English speaking films.
One name: Luc Besson.
Also a year or two ago I saw a couple of interesting non English speaking films: The Swimming Pool and Intermission. Well, The Swimming Pool was half English, half French. And Intermission was all English but in a completely impossible to understand Irish accent. The first time I watched it (no subtitles) I couldn't understand 10% of what was said. The second time I got closer to 50%.
Dark city
Screamers
Island
I robot
Impostor
Paycheck
The new Dune and Children of Dune is fine too, but they a low budget movies.
One name: Luc Besson.
He does do some great stuff. Atlantis would have to be the most beautiful movie I've ever watched.
Also a year or two ago I saw a couple of interesting non English speaking films: The Swimming Pool and Intermission. Well, The Swimming Pool was half English, half French.
Actually, I've seen The Swimming Pool. The elder of the two female leads spoke French slowly enough that I could actually understand some of it from what I learnt in high-school. I find this is usually the case with non-native French speakers, but I can hardly make out a single word when a real Frenchman gets going.
Another great one I just remembered (I usually forget about films very quickly, so if I remember, it must be really good):
Shallow Grave
I find this is usually the case with non-native French speakers
She IS a native French speaker. I think.
She IS a native French speaker. I think.
Nope, Charlotte Rampling is English.
Just to name a few off the top of my head:
The Shawshank Redemption
Lucky Number Slevin
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Gladiator
Nope, Charlotte Rampling is English.
Yes, but "she was educated at Jeanne d'Arc Académie pour Jeunes Filles in Versailles, France", she lives in Paris and was married for 20 years to Jean Michel Jarre, so I think her French should be quite authentic. I think your problem is actually with the many different accents and subtypes of colloquial French.
I think your problem is actually with the many different accents and subtypes of colloquial French.
And with the definition of native speaker.
Whatever the reason, I was surprised at how easily I understood her. And she's certainly retained her British accent when she speaks English.
Latest couple of months top 3:
Transamerica
Hotel Rwanda
Maria full of grace
All time high:
Back to the future (1)
Special mention:
Crash
Babel
One name: Luc Besson.
/me nods in agreement.
Paycheck
Must... Resist... Urge... To... Bash... Paycheck...
I did't believe John Woo could direct a bad movie but Paycheck proved without a doubt that I was wrong, big time.
I can name a few of my favourite movies off the top of my head:
*El Mariachi
*Equilibrium
*Gattaca
*Taxi 2
*Leon
*Predator 2
*Häjyt
Must... Resist... Urge... To... Bash... Paycheck...
I had to resist as well. There have only been two good adaptions of PKD books - Blade Runner, and A Scanner Darkly.
Another one I saw recently that was extremely good:
25th Hour (Spike Lee)
Strange, no one mentioned "A clockwork Orange". Book and movie were great.
You're right! How did I forget that one? And Dr Strangelove.
Meh, you all forgot The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, although the book was much better than the movie... and you were asking for movies... nevermind.
I didn't like the movie at all.
Fair enough! It's probably not your type of movie if you give the Da Vinci Code 4/5.
Oh, forgot to mention "A Beautiful Mind", which I thought was a rather good movie too.
I don't think it's that easy.
Didn't you agree with any of the movies I liked? Because I do like "A Beutiful Mind" a lot. It's on my fours list. And the difference between the fours and the fives is really small.
I saw it (by chance) on TV about a year ago. On the TV schedule page they wrote it was a comedy.
They sure knew what they were doing.
Lucky Number Slevin
I didn't think it was anything special.
Gladiator
Great!
Crash
It was good all right. You're Swedish, try out Filmtipset.se if you're short of things to do sometime.
Leon
Agreed! It's great! I didn't like the extended directors cut though. It focuses more on the pedophile aspect od Leon's relation with the little girl.
I liked M. Night's new one a lot, "A Lady in the Water." Although, I doubt many others will like it, just a select few.
And I don't care what anyone says, I enjoy the Matrix. I put the first one in whenever I need some inspiration to work on bigger projects. Yeah, overrated blah blah blah, I'll just imagine punching you over a thosand times in both slow and fast motion at the same time.
Oh, and Princess Bride ftw!
[edit]
Scratch that, anything by Hayao Miyazaki is my favorite movie.
I like a lot of movies... the newest movie I like is probably Casino Royale.
The last ones I saw that I liked are: El Laberinto del Fauno, Children of men and Perfume.
Scratch that, anything by Hayao Miyazaki is my favorite movie.
Oh do animes count as movies? In that case I need to add a few things to the list
</li>
Oh do animes count as movies?
Not really.
I still need to see Perfume, I've heard good things about it. Did I mention Memoirs of a Geisha yet as a good movie?
I saw Casino Royale. 't was ok, but I didn't think it was specifically good. Maybe I'm just not a big action movie fan.
Hey, LennyLen has taste!
Hey, LennyLen has taste!
I deny everything. And if you keep making such slanderous statements, you'll hear from my lawyer.
I've forgotten to mention:
Final Fantasy
Kaena: the Prophecy
Oh do animes count as movies?
I don't see why not.
Moulin Rouge, The Others, Pi, The Usual Suspects, K-Pax from the top of my head.
I'm going to add Last King of Scotland to my list of good movies. I just saw it tonight, and was extremely impressed with the acting. I feel it could have done more to show how horrific Amin's crimes were, but apart form that, it was an excellent portrayal of him.
I liked M. Night's new one a lot, "A Lady in the Water." Although, I doubt many others will like it, just a select few.
I liked it too.
Moulin Rouge
Hate it. But I don't like musicals.
K-Pax
Love it.
Has anyone here seen Shortbus? It's been praised a lot, not by me though. Behind all the "look we dare to show these scenes too" the story is weak and pretty boring.
I don't generally like anime, but I did see Memories by Katsuhiro Otomo and liked it.
[quote Dennis Busch]Oh do animes count as movies?
Not really.
</quote>Um explain that one for me. That would cut out all animated movies.
Hell, that would cut out MOST movies these days. Most of the big movies are mostly computer animated.
Um explain that one for me.
Because 8 frames per second does not a moving picture make.
Go check all the stats for all the animated movies ever, and come back with some evidence.
And I am talking movies. Not the crap Disney has been pushing out.
I've seen many animated movies that were much higher quality than your average crap from most studios.
Hell, that would cut out MOST movies these days. Most of the big movies are mostly computer animated.
There is a difference between terms 'anime' and 'animated movies'. They are not the same.
They are not the same.
One is made by Asians, one isn't. Big whoop de doo.
One is made by Asians, one isn't. Big whoop de doo.
I would say that the animation style is the difference. Anyway I don't know any reason why anime shouldn't count as movie. I just said that they are not the same.
EDIT:
at least for me.
There is a difference between terms 'anime' and 'animated movies'.
Yeah, in America it's cartoon vs. animated movie (small screen vs big screen). How does it work for the Asians? Anime vs.
How does it work for the Asians? Anime vs.
There may be a term I don't know for that, but I'd assume its just "Big Screen" vs "Little Screen". Then again, they also have another category, the OVA, which are generally much better quality than the TV shows, just that they were released direct to DVD/Video.
In "america" the "OVA" are all the stuff that couldn't even make it to TV
Back to the future trilogy
Rocky IV
Bloodsport
Conan the Barbarian
Labyrinth
Gladiator
The matrix(only the first one)
Braveheart
X-men III
Terminator II
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Forrest Gump
Army of darkness
The tragedy of Macbeth
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Science Fiction movies:
Star Wars Episode IV.
The Matrix I.
Terminator I and II.
Back to the Future I.
Robocop I.
Total Recall.
... And Dr Strangelove.
Seconded.
Playtime by Jacques Tati.
If we are adding animated movies, I would like to suggest "Wallace and Grommit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit". Miyazaki is good.
"Wallace and Grommit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit".
Oh yes, I liked that one, and "The corpse bride" too. From Pixar, I really liked "The Incredibles" and "Monsters Inc.".
Some good animated movies I like are: Ice Age, Ice Age 2 (not as good, but still worth seeing), Shrek (but I did not like the sequel at all), The one with the fish looking for his parents and everyone I forgot.
Ice Age, Ice Age 2
Those two, I hated. Never thought a movie could be so boring. Robots, Cars and the movie about the fish were bad too. But I liked Toy Story I, and the second one was so-so.
Termanator 4 sure>:(
