I don't know the year, but I still remember the first time I went to an arcade place. It was actually some house's garage, and there were three games: Frogger, Star Force and some fighting game (Combat Ninja or something like that) where you kept the punch button down and the character would accumulate energy, getting a light halo around him, with the first boss being some guy spitting fire.

Of course, police would raid the place every other week, and we would have to wait until the old lady brought them back.

Makes me feel old again :( I remember I actually helped carry the MK machine into the local, and they gave me 20 coins for that.

There weren't many arcade games where I lived in the late 80's. They probably started to appear in the early 90's, but they were pretty expensive to play. Every local gas station had pinball machine(s), so I played pinballs.

My church has that old X-Men arcade game. I like playing Storm, and not just because her buttons still work. :P

I was never big on arcade, but I played a fair bit of Street Fighter II back in it's glory days. I was also an absolute pro at this one vertical shooter I still can't remember the name of. I once beat the whole bloody thing with not one death. Also remember an old Superman game that shifted playstyle between three different genres every level; I was never a Superman fan but that kind of impressed me at the time.

Also threw quarters into a lot of no name shooters which I still recall fondly but could never name. My hometown had a really small arcade, so my exposure was kind of limited. :P I was all about the Atari and NES anyway ....

You consider the TMNT game to be old-school? In that case, I'm with gnolam.

Yeah, the old mechanical numbered ones! I was ~16 or so when Pong came out.

Todd Cope

I never played a pinball machine but I vaguely remember a Ms. Pacman machine with a pinball game attached that I played once. Anyone remember this or was I just dreaming?

Well I didn't grow up near any arcade machines. But on visits to the seaside (where old people and old arcade machines go to slowly die) prior to the age of about 16 I played Star Wars (the Atari one), Defender, Arkanoid, Ridge Racer, Gauntlet, Outrun, APB, Hard Drivin', Chase HQ and SCI: Chase HQ 2.

Dennis

Sadly, I never got the chance to see an arcade from the inside. I don't know if we even had that many arcades here in germany but I know for sure that in the small village were I grew up, we didn't have a single arcade anywhere. But the C64 and Amiga gaming scene was pretty big in the neighbourhood. sigh sweet childhood memories...:'(

OICW

On the first computer we had at home (486 Texas Intruments Travelmate laptop):
Tubular Worlds
Alley Cat
Golden Axe

I posted that with the (somewhat naive) belief someone wouldn't crack the obvious jokes. :P Truth be told, she just seems stronger than the rest (which really is as it should be :)) ....

I recall playing "Rush 'n' Attack" on an arcade machine before I ever played it on the NES. I remember a wild-west style arcade shooter game where you have a plastic gun as your controller (those games were common at convenience stores in the 80's). Centipede and Mrs. Pacman were always favorites of mine. More recently, I spent a ton of quarters on Tekken2 at the arcade. :)

An Ly

I reckon I could guess your age just by the ganes you list.

Mine are:

Double Dragon
Raiden 2
Street Fighter 2

Played a lot of others but they are the favs.

I actually didn't think about it when I made that list but all of the games in my "Old School" list were released in the 80s (though Final Fight cuts it quite close[/url]).

And yes, I'm with you guys as well about the age thing.
