I closed the previous thread because it is not polite to post something, receive feedback, and then change the original post knowing replies have already been posted.

It's not polite to not read more then 5% of the thread's text either, like 100% of the repliers did. Furthermore, I couldn't have done that if this forum didn't let you edit posts, which is a totally insane feature.

Without the original topic, the discussion is pointless, and new posters may get confused.

Good. What's the point in keeping a thread when nobody reads it or even tries to understand it before posting their crap? I didn't expect a freakin' "solution". This is a forum. Where you discuss stuff. I am sure that some people here are in the same (or at least similar) situation and could tell their story. Then again, maybe they are too wimpy for that.

A forum for a game library shouldn't contain too many MTV kids with anime avatars. At least that was what I thought.

I read the whole thread. One of your sentences was:

WTF am I supposed to do?

Sounds like a question to me. Possibly one where you wanted answers to.

And still you use it? I don't get it...

Is that what you wanted in the first place? Why didn't you simply ask for that?

For the sake of whatever, please refrain from verbally attacking people here.

I am pretty sure that should have been an insult too, so the above also fits here.

You assume wrong. I, for one, read all your post.

I have been around for a couple of years, and people barely complain about being able to edit a post. From time to time they complain about not being able to post if they have been the last one to post, but being able to bump a thread and edition is enough and far better than being able to write three consecutive posts.

You ended your original post with *waits for the expected reactions*. I believe the expected reactions appeared. Some people tried to give you advice, some others posted their own experiences, yet others had fun. Choose a random off-topic thread with more than a couple of replies and you will notice the same behaviour.

Quote:

Posting your pic instead of an anime avatar doesn't make you more mature. Derezo has a Homer avatar, and you will hardly find someone knowing hardware better in this community. 23 has his Optimus Prime avatar and he is one of the best STL helpers. X-G has a hand drawn avatar, and (although sometimes I wonder how many punches in the face he gets per day at school) is one of the most knowledgeable members.

I am not sure if this is the first forum you ever join. If it wasn't, you should have already learned there are different kind of people in there, and not everyone will react the same way you do. This site allows custom javascript. Or you could use Mozilla's GreaseMonkey or Opera's UserScript to hide posts of those you don't like listening to. But be warned, if you don't change, you will only see your posts in the threads.

That's a logic error I don't know the name of. "It's you're fault because you didn't make it hard for me to do wrong."

Jakub Wasilewski

I read 100% of your post, which was the main reason for not responding to it. It was phrased in a way that clearly showed that you will dismiss any answers you get.

I recommend that you change your attitude, or leave - for yours and ours sake.

I believe it's also not polite to turn down people's advice in a negative manner when you come to them for advice in the first place. You said you get fired from McDonald's for being rude to people and spitting in their food. If you took up more of a positive attitude around people in general, you wouldn't be getting the sack of crap in life. Your life is very strongly influenced by the people around you, especially those who have the power to improve your standard of life. If you don't treat those people with necessary respect, they wouldn't have any reason to respect you. The only thing you are doing here is giving people less reason to help you out. Frankly, I'm quite surprised you even came for help in the first place if you were "expecting" those reactions.

Dwelling on it won't make it go away. This community doesn't need an emo corner, much less the world. Why did you post your problems here? If you were expecting something of an emofest, may I suggest googling "Emo Forums"?

I'd rather have people help me figure out a way to end my suffering than to increase it by sharing pains.

Nobody here is too wimpy, they just strive to be happy. Nothing wrong with being happy. You need to change your worldview.

nonnus29

Granted my post in the other thread was probably the most harsh, but at that point it was obvious you were spurning genuine attempts to help/advise so I chose a more severe tactic of questioning your base assumptions. Obviously it didn't work.

I do take issue with your claiming 'no one read your posts'. We all read it. Playing the victim in life is never a good solution. Your behavior is very questionable. Like others said if your looking for sympathy, go elsewhere.

edit; oh and what major forum software DOESN"T allow you to edit posts? None that I've seen.

NyanKoneko

I can only think of one person with an anime avatar, and he speaks Japanese and stuff, so it's appropriate. ???

What exactly is an MTV avatar?

Jonny Cook

Is it just me, or does this guy hate everything?

NyanKoneko

Nah, he doesn't hate everything. I've seen this before. He just hates us since we are mean and he a vulnerable guy to pick on. It's fun to pick on him because he gets mad so easily. ;D

Jonny Cook

Oh... well that isn't very nice! Hey, how bout from now on, we all pick on me?

NyanKoneko

Jonny, you're cool! It's only fun picking on losers.

Jonny Cook

;D Someone thinks I'm cool! Hooray!
But still... I'm against picking even more so if it's on a so-called "loser" (which I don't think he is). Shouldn't we give him love and support to help him through his hard times?

Many of us have gone through the same "problems" and then some, but we grew up and learned. You should try doing that.

Jonny Cook

Oh, and I've been meaning to ask: where'd redneck come from? Most people here don't even live in the US! (I'm assuming that's what the term is targeted at.)

Karadoc ~~

I agree that most of the replies to Kimmo's post were less than helpful. The guy is in a bad way - sarcastic comments on his situation aren't exactly going to help him 'get over it'. We all know that when someone is angry and upset, the things they don't need to hear are:
"Hey, you are angry and upset - take my crumby advice and everything will get better", or
"Hey, you are angry and upset - too bad", or
"Hey, you're angry and upset - by the way, I think you suck!"
I know that if I'm even a little bit angry, and someone says: "You're getting angry" - that can make me get angry. I can try to ignore it, but my point is that it is anti-helpful.
You need to exercise some tact in these situations. Maybe you don't know what to say to help, that's ok, just don't say the things that make it worse. This is a forum - you have heaps of time to think about your reply before you let it fly. Obviously Kimmo is in an unstable situation, so put some time in to think about tact.

I can't see, where anybody said "do this and everything will get better", i think people were merely giving some advice or sharing their experiences and left it open to him to decide, whether this would "make everything better" or not.

Quote:

"Hey, you are angry and upset - too bad", or
"Hey, you're angry and upset - by the way, I think you suck!"

I agree about those kinds of answers. They are extremely counter-constructive and not helpful at all. I got(and still get) very upset about answers like those myself, when i am the one who's complaining about something.(But "complaining", in this case, most probably does not do justice to the situation he feels, he is in. I don't know a more appropriate word for this.)

Obviously Kimmo is in an unstable situation, so put some time in to think about tact.

OICW

The only thing I'm going to say is that I've read the whole original thread and gave you expected answers, because there are no other possible answers to that request. You should think about yourself and about your self respect if you allow you to sit at home, do nothing and complain how unfair life is. Have you even tried to live? (rhetorical question).

You didn't get one. You got advice on how to find one.

My advice would be to try to work on your social skills. It's not easy to get that going but once you have started on it it becomes easier. In my opinion that's the only long term solution to your problems.
A good place to start is to stop swearing every other word.

Felipe Maia

I've got 3 possible solutions for Kimmo:
1- Finally do something right and manage to take your own life - worst one.
2- Get a life, instead of posting stupid things where you don't even care about the answears, go study, get smart, then go get a job.
3- Go find another forum and post there, people aren't suposed to help you or anything, if it only was a doubt on coding or something - best one.

With all my regards Kimmo, good luck.

Actually, I don't think you did too badly. You may have challenged some of his views, but you never took a jab at him. The problem is that the other posts would have put him in a bad frame of mind, so that it doesn't really matter much what you say - it'll all look bad.

The guy spills his guts in front of us, and miran rushes in to get first reply with: "Yeah, you got it so bad. Is there a reason to go on anyway?". Stupid thing to say. His doesn't exactly 'redeem himself' with his second post either. After a blow like that, Kimmo would have started trying to pack his guts back in - if you know what I mean.
Some of our posts were ok, but most of them were just taking jabs at him, and that basically shrouds the whole thing in hostility.
One way to understand what I'm talking about is to imagine we are all in a house together, all of us allegro people - in the flesh. We're just sitting around on the couches, drinking tea, eatting lunch, minding our own business more or less. Kimmo comes in and indicates that he's feeling down. We already know that he is feeling down because we are in the house with him and we can see it, so for him to actually say something about it must mean that it is quite bad. The first comment cuts his skin, so he hits back a little (metaphorically speaking); pretty soon everyone is shouting - so even though some good things are being said, no one really hears them over the shouting.
If it is difficult for you to imagine how the house situation would play out, then prehaps your social skills aren't up to scratch.
To Kimmo, the personal attacks are higher priority than the maybe useful comments. The maybe useful comments require some thought; thought which they will not be getting, because of all the personal attacks hogging the processor.

There are probably a lot of people here who have fairly crappy lives; and one way to deal with a crappy life is to put yourself above others.

NyanKoneko

Wait a minute, you're running linux on one monitor and windows on another... with one computer!?

MY HEAD ASPLODE!!! :o

Thomas Fjellstrom

Not quite ;) I have a program called krdc (which is using rdesktop, a terminal services client) running full screen on my second monitor, connected to my mini-itx box that has xp running on it :D Its so much more convineient than a KVM or a desk big enough for two sets of mice/keyboards.

Now, once those new CPUs with the virtualization extensions are out and cheap enough, you'll beable to run two OS's like that no problem (thats my guess anyhow).

edit:
What sucks though, is I had to modify krdc to properly fullscreen on my second monitor :( didnt take much though. Which makes me wonder why it wasn't already included...

Billybob

Nyan: Awww it's so cute! Make sure you don't use the computer though, you might wake it up.

...

Personally I like to use my second monitor as extra window space. I'll throw stuff over there when I need to see it and something else, such as some web documentation on primary and my code on the second monitor. It's way easier than trying to cram both windows on one screen.
But I also occasionally use Cygwin/X to do a remote desktop of my linux slave machine. Only problem there is that it won't go full screen...

Now let's see here, I better add something useful to this most:

Not really. I fond it was jsut too much work with different resolutions, too ugly with non-like monitors, and just too much space with two sufficiently large monitors (you can be reading something on one side of the desk and completely miss something on the other). SO one big monitor at 1600x1200 is enough for me. The 1920x1200 is nice, but still pretty big.

OICW

I have one option how to do that - connect my laptop to TV but there I cannot read anything. But I'd like to have two identical LCD pannels on my desk (I would need space for them) on one I could have Dev-Cpp and on the other for example Firefox. I don't like switching between apps. And even if I would have high resolution I hate running apps in windowed mode, I like fullscreen.

NyanKoneko

Authentic tacos are open faced and taste 10x better, and you can ask for different meats, including tongue and brain. Tongue is the best.

Pravit

Wait a minute, aren't US tacos basically open-faced tacos that are folded up?

There is a place in town that sells fish tacos. I have yet to try them!

NyanKoneko

American tacos tend to have oversized hard or soft shells, and they add lettuce and cheese inside the taco for some reason. They don't use taco sauce, and they only offer ground up beef (sometimes chicken) for the meat.

Nutella is great for breakfast. White bread, lots and lots of butter and a very thick layer of nutella over that. Yum Yum.

Basically, a taco is a tortilla with meat and sauce. The best tacos are 'al pastor' (shepperd?), with some pinneaple, cilantro and onion. You can add some guacamole or hot souce, and they're delicious!

Hey, they use those big hunks of meat to make gyros/doener too(another one of my favorite foods)!

When you say sauce, is it a special sauce used for tacos, or can it just be salsa? Because tortillas with meat and sauce sound quite familiar to the tacos I'm familiar with. Except they usually fold them up when they serve them. Do you eat the tacos just like that on the plate or do you fold them up first?

My favorite food would be a Korean dish that I've never seen spelled, but is pronounced something like "Gol-bee". Roasted ribs or something, it's practially burnt. If you like the ends of meat loaf you'd love this.

Earlier somebody asked where the term "redneck" comes from, I heard a long time ago that the U.S. southern cotten farmers that were too poor to own slaves got their necks burnt red from tending the cotten, they were so poor that they didn't live as well as real slaves. They'd still treat the slaves they met in town or wherever badly though (the dreaded 'n' word). To the wealthier plantation owners it was kind of funny to watch.

NyanKoneko

Yeah, that's why rednecks are associated with the south. +)

EDIT:
Speaking of which.... Did people hear about the million-more march that celebrated the 10th anniversary of the million man march?

President Bush's approval rating among the black population is right now at 2%.

Throw in a dash of crooked elections.
Add a pinch of homophobia.
Take the moral high ground and rally the christian right as a born-again christian.
And finally, mix it all together with a war on terror and public fear.

I kid, of course, but that's the feeling I got after the 2004 election.

Tobias Dammers

He's so lucky black people aren't allowed to vote in the US.
I have 2 monitors (15" at 800x600 and 17" at 1200 x 960) as well, and I use them for coding (console in small monitor, editor / proggy in large one), for music transcriptions (notation software on large display, mp3 player and documentation on smaller one), also for file copying (drag from one display to other). Otherwise, to have some background stuff running on the smaller monitor (like cd burning, file copying, downloading) while working on the large one.
And yes I like food, but there's so many different kinds, making me choose is really really cruel...

You're kidding, right?
