WoW made me doit
spellcaster

I just pulled my first gaming all-nighter in quite some time. (I think the first and only other time when I forget to sleep over playing a game was years ago while playing CivI).

And I didn't even do something special. I just wasted time. Went fishing. Cooked the fish. Improved my tailoring a bit, sold the bags I created in the WoW's "Shopping Channel" while fishing some more... got some new skills, made an easy quest, walked around a bit, "collected" some more reagents for my tailoring and cooking skill, disenchanted my tailored stuff to raise my enchantment skills... stuff like that.

Played a bit hide and seek with underwater monsters 5-10 levels above me... improved my wand slinging, drank some dwarven ale with a stranger I had just helped to get out of a sticky situation...

So:

"Hello, my name is spellcaster and I am a WoW addict."

I was thinking about doing an all-nighter last night, but I have off work today so I wanted to rest up for a all dayer & all nighter today. :) Probably 20 solid hours of play coming up on me. Time flies when you play that game.

Steve Terry

I think I'm gonna be sick....

X-G

Ahahahah! Join us and the Dark Iron Dwarves! (See, that's a World of Warcraft pun. Dark Iron Dwarves... Dark Side of the Force? Get it? ;))

spellcaster

Additional funny thing to know:
I got a mail from the "City of Heroes" operators today that gave me 2 more free days as an apology for a few lagging issues they had some weeks ago. And while there was some lag n CoH, it was never really disturbing.
The thing that made me stop playing CoH (and after that buying WoW) was simply that the level design (maps and textures) is boring and very repetive, and that their missions are boring. Extremly boring. And they seem to never change regardless of level. Combina boring missions with bad level design and some other issues ... and you have a game that is no fun after a couple of days.
And that's what I told them as well. Let's see if I get any response :)

Soga

This makes me think of scary movies.

"It steals souls... will YOURS be next?"

Dundundundunnn! Now I know I definitely am NOT playing WoW or ANY other MMORPGs. The evil! The terror!

Heh, that all nighter probably was a good idea as World of Warcraft went down for eight hours this morning for maintenance. It should've been back up since an hour ago, so I'm off. :)

Torbjörn Josefsson

Does anybody know where the house of the "crazy cat lady" is? I was in there once (back then I didn't have the money to buy a cat) and I wasn't able to find in this morning.
Speaking of pets: Will they survice my death? I'm a warlock and I die pretty often :)

23yrold3yrold

As I understand it, warlocks don't care if their minions live or die. If they live, great. If they die, summon another one. It's not like a hunter, who actually has to bond with his pet, keep it happy, earn its loyalty, etc. But then, my warlock is only level 8, so what do I know?

I bought Soul Calibur 2 for GC on Saturday because I saw it for 30 bucks and couldn't pass it up. I might even play it sometime ...

Sure. My demons can die. I'll even sacrifice them for my protection. But a cat is nothing I'd conjure, it's something I buy for an impressive price (for low level chars that is).

Arvidsson

spellcaster: the crazy cat lady is located right outside the nortshire abbey area. when heading towards goldshire it should be on your right.
when you die you summon the cat from the pet box you buy.

Pets like cats aren't even involved in battle. They don't fight, and they don't die. They just fade away when you die, and you resummon them as usual.

Funny story. I'm in my high 20's, doing my business in Raven Hill Cemetary in Duskwood. Lots of players running around that night, and I end up partnered with two others, one of who is a Gnome Warlock (forget the other guy; I think he was a Paladin. Anyway).

Anyone who hangs out in Raven Hill knows a powerful (for my level) Elite wanders around there named Mor'Ladim. When I first hooked up with these two, the Elite had wandered too close to them and the little Gnome had to sacrifice her Voidwalker so we could book out of there. A few minutes later, while we're searching for a tomb entrance, we run into him yet again! Once again, we leave the Voidwalker to die so we can run. She's just sitting on the lawn crying (who says Warlocks don't care?) and I'm making light fun of her because she can't keep her minions alive. As she summons a new Voidwalker, she promises she'll take care of this one. I mean, what are the odds we'll run into him again, right? Right?

Oy. We find the tomb, we do our business there (very quick quest) we leave, and who's waiting for us right outside? Man, what did Voidwalkers ever do to this guy? We're done the quest, so we don't even take off in the same directions; we leave the Voidwalker to die (third one), I'm laughing my butt off, the Gnome is crying "Noooooo!" as she runs for her life. ;D It was not a good ten minutes for her. ;D

Quote:

And it's a good thing, because some people pay upwards of 35g for them. I bought my mount with money earned from farming black whelp pets in the Badlands. I have a pet owl; seems fitting for a Druid. I gave a spare whelp to my mage; she looks good with it. A 60 Rogue in my guild has a Worg Pup pet, which drops in one of the high-level instances. Apparently this thing can make a show of attacking and dying; she's seen it nip at opponents in duels. Does no damage, but looks neat. :)

On fishing: I need to up my skill there. :( Neglected it for quite some time. My Herbalism, Alchemy, and First Aid are all 300 though. :) Cooking is about 200. Fishing is about ... 50? :P

Steve Terry

WTF is a voidwalker??

23yrold3yrold

http://members.gamedev.net/23yrold3yrold/WOWpics/voidwalker1.jpg

The one on the right. :) Gnome warlocks are funny, because they're generally smaller than what they can summon. :)

Other summoned minions are imp, succubus, and felhound (obvious Zergling spoof :)). There's a couple other high-level ones (Doomguard?), but warlocks are not a class I'm terribly familiar with ...

Billybob

I got my pet when I ran Deadmines. Was dropped. I coulda had two, but at the time I didn't know what it was and my bags were full so I didn't grab the first one. I got the second drop though, which was a bird. Kinda lame, but whatever.

Richard Phipps

I'm sure it's a great game, but when it's addictive to the point that people devote all their free time to it then there's no way I'll dare play it.

Chris's game is gathering dust, MeMo's vanished into unknown depths, Spellcaster will soon be too tired to cast any spells and it seems that I'll never see any more games from X-G like I was hoping for.

Blizzard have a lot to answer for.

I still do plenty. I'm still in church ministry, I've spent some time hanging out with guys I've met at work, etc. I'm not even playing today; no time. Plus that other job starting in a few months (yay!) My reformat also had something to do with lack of TMS production; while I've reinstalled the easy stuff like Blender, I have no enthusiasm for reinstalling all my compilers, IDE's, editors, libraries, etc. All of which was a pretty big headache in the first place and my motivation to go through it all again is a bit low. :P And I'll get bored of WoW in not terribly long; I'm just kind of grinding to 60. I've seen most of what the game has to offer now, so it's not like I'll be playing forever. Didn't see anyone complaining when I went on my Starcraft hiatus. On the contrary; plenty of you keep whining I don't play it anymore. :)

Anyway, I gotta run. See ya.

Steve Terry

Now now now... Starcraft was a once a week ordeal, only on Sunday morning and it lasted only a few hours... not this stay up for three days in a row schizophrenia.

I know I won't spend enough time playing it to justify the money it would cost me. Not having Windows installed is also a reason not to get the game (and although I'll probably install Windows again at some point, I won't start using it regularly anyway).
Things might be different if there was a Linux client, but World of Warcraft is and will remain the only Blizzard game I don't own.

My opinion, you don't need to play much per month to get your money's worth. I think its very cheap actually for entertainment/cost ratio. Gone to the movies lately? That is almost half a month worth of WoW time.

Good; that's the general idea. :) Would you prefer they hit your priest? :) Stay in defensive stance, count on your teammates to keep you healthy, and do your job by drawing the enemies attention from the more easily killed classes. Tank for the win. :)

Ultio

Late to the thread; but on the topic of WoW: has anyone hit 60 yet? The highest I've hit so far is 42. But then again, it goes to mention that I have multiple characters at levels such as the one I just mentioned at 42, one at 36, another at 27, etc, etc. Maybe if I dedicated all my time I'd be up and ready for when they open up the battlegrounds? :)

Even so, I've considered cancelling my account a few times. I never actually got around to doing it though. Pretty awesome, when I reviewed my account information: Blizzard has given me a whole free week of play due to server issues at launch time. Go Blizzard!

I'd rather play Second Life. Free trial time, one time only fee to play unlimitedly, an optional monthly fee for extra features. I became 16 yesterday. Got some new spells. And then we decided to walk from Ironforge to Menthil Harbour (which means we had to go throw areas with monster around 4-12 levels higher than us). I actually amde it without getting killed and then we went fishing at the harbour :)
I hope to sell the fished in IF for quite some money today. I also got some nice magic stuff which means eithr my disenchanter skill (for stuff I didn't want tp sell) or my money bag (for stuff sold) were increaed.

Speaking of selling stuff: what is an orb (off hand equip) with +4 int worth? I sold it for 15silver and the guy said "yes" way to quickly :)

And all that in zombie mode... at the end I actually had problems with fishing because I was that tired. I even clicked the wrong mouse button from time to time :)
I couldn't read the chat log anymore without really concentrating on it... and I won't event tell you how slow my typing was. So I decided to go to bed pretty early (3:00 in the morning).

Oh, and an orb held in off-hand? I'd say that's worthless, but what do I know? Well, I know I could put a lot better things in my other hand. Like my neat shield I got from Gnomeregan that has a 5% chance of dealing extra damage to my enemy every time I'm struck. Not to mention better stats than my last shield.

23yrold3yrold

Not all classes use shields. :)

Billybob

I'm sure they could use other more useful things though. I've had other off-hand items that have cool tricks like dropping the enemy's armor.

spellcaster
Quote:

I bought a stack of light leather the other day and paid 5 silver

Yeah. I considered starting a 2nd char just to get access to skinning :)
My tailor dosn't need leather often, but I think it's pretty pointless to pay high prices for wool or leather.
When I got the pattern to do 8 slot bags I considered buying wool (because I wasn't high level enough to win against the lvl 18+ humanoids that normally drop wool). But the prices are just plain crazy. I would pay more for the wool than I would get for the finished bag.

I'm actually wondering why people buy stuff there.

Mars

I started as a skinner/leatherer, but I found the stuff I could build not interesting enough to pursue the skills. So I changed to mining and engineering at level 18 or so. I got my skills much higher than before in much shorter time.

The problem with an alt for skinning is that you probably need pretty heavy leather and to be able to get that stuff you need a quite high skill and kill quite high level mobs. So you will have to invest a lot of time -- most of the time it's less of a pain to ask friends or guild mates and wait. :)

Oh and the 5 silver were quite reasonable compared to the auction house. :)

Billybob

I would disagree a tad Mars. If your alt is something you like to play, like another class you enjoy, then there's no problem. You'll play both chars 50% of the time each, get both to high levels, and thus use all your material skills.
At least that's what I'm hoping to do when I make my alt Druid.

Rick

I don't understand how anyone could have 2 characters. I mean I'm overwhelmed with the amount of things to do with 1 character. I mean wow. This game blows my mind on how big it is.

23yrold3yrold

Yeah, it does that initially. But eventually you get bored of your class and you want to try it from another race/class perspective. All the high-levels in my guild have low level alts.

Technically speaking, you don't have to kill it to skin it. ;) As long as someone else does. My Priest could skin anything he got near, though, and I never had any problem killing stuff.

Though, I have no real use for the skins, as I don't have leatherworking. ;D I have tailoring, which uses skins occasionally.

I think my two biggest problems with WoW are that there aren't any discounts for multiple accounts (in the same house, say, for a family), and that you can't move characters between realms. The name taken argument doesn't really have any real value, because you could simply change your name. If they don't want people switching back of forth, make it so they can't. Once or twice a year is more than enough for most people.

I actually never got ganked that night, which is suprising considering the amount of Horde there, and the high levels. I guess most of the Horde were goofing off. I ran from Southshore to the east to do a quest at some farm. Did that for a bit, killed a mob walking down the road for the quest, and then walked back. Never got ganked during the whole thing. Odd, indeed. I even ran past some horde. Guess I'm just one sneaky ninja ;)

Carrus85: If you're unemployed you might be able to make a living by crafting stuff in WoW and selling them? :) -I don't know - just heard that there are people who do stuff like that in EQ.. or at least hired a bunch of mexicans to do it

james_lohr

It wouldn't surprise me if there's a whole industry of Chinese WoW farmers. I can just see it, hordes of young children taken from their homes and forced into poverty stricken factories where they are put to the most mind numbing work imaginable: playing WoW 24/7. Come to think of it they'd probably also only have the bare minimum of computers. No sound, 10" CRT and uncomfortable chairs. :'( poor kids

Evert

I hear they're selling gold on ebay.

Derezo

hey.. that's not a bad idea... set up a bunch of WoW farms in China! I'll strike it rich!!!! :o

I think that whole situation is incredibly absurd - you can actually get Paid to Pretend to make a Pretend-item :D

It's called a "service". People selling stuff like this on ebay save you the time to find that item yourself. While gold is a pretty simple item to be traded (since you can acquire it in a couple of ways) finding a very specific item will require a lot of time - if you ever find it.

It's like paying somebody to do something for you. Like asking somebody to observe your children. You can do it yourself but maybe you'd like to spend your time doing something else?

Torbjörn Josefsson

The thing is that it's a figmentary service that could just as well be accomplished by the setting of a variable.

If I've understood it correctly it works something like this: You go to some place where there is a smithy and select the "Make Sword Lvl I" option, and then you click your mouse around to pretend you are making a sword, until such time as the program decides that the sword is finished (depending on your skill-stats, etc.)

What happens is that your inventory gets one more "Sword Lvl I" in it, that you have been pretending to make, but you have not actually Made anything - the programmers willing, you could just as well just press the swordmaking button and get as many swords as you like. Your "swordmaking" was never really required, but just a way for you to play that you were making a sword

What I mean is that makes the 'sword' in question just about the most ephemeral 'product' in existence - although I do understand that people will sometimes want to buy them, if they don't feel like pretending to make a sword themselves

Um yeah.
But that's like saying you go to an ATC and click the "Gimme 50bucks" button. While it works like this, it's not really that easy.

You have to invest time to get the items. Say you want to create a special magic item. That item might require Wool, lether, Magic Dust and a couple of other ingredients. While you might get the base materials for wool, you cannot make it into usable wool unless you're tailor. If you're not a leatherer, you won't get any leather. Unless you you're skilled leatherer you won't get heavy leather.
Unless you're an entchanter you can't disentchant items into magical components (which destroys the original item BTW, so it's a pretty costly process) and even then you'll first need to find that magic item.

In other words: Even if you invest a lot of your time harvesting for items, you might not even be able to get the base materials.
And if you have the materials you'll have to find somebody to create the final product - and he'll normally charge you for that, so you'll have to invest time making money.
And while the items might not be real, the time invested is real. And as we all know, time is money.

EDIT: it's kinda like buying software. All you need to create software is other software, skill and time. And yet some people actually buy software.

Many people pay to get a registeration number for a program - even if all it does is to set the "registered" -flag.

However, I can't understand how someone would spend hours "making a sword". Especially as I know how games work...

't Is called role-playing.

spellcaster

You'd spend hours getting the materials, not making the sword.
If you can make the sword at all. Since that would require that you have the right job and the right skill in it.

EDIT:
I'll walk down from Stormwind to Booty Bay today. I want to get a Parrot pet and that fishing book. I think I'll actually buy more than one pet and more than one book. Let's see how well they sell in IF :)

Walking down to BB at my pretty low level could become quite an adventure ... heh.

Arvidsson

The safe way is to swim there.

Run. And get the flight point before you're ganked five times. :)

And what UI mod are you using? It's Cosmos isn't it? I don't remember Cosmos looking like that...

It's Cosmos. A few components of it, anyway.

And they all have 'twx' in their names ...

And paying for services in game isn't that confusing. It would save you hours of work earning items yourself. I don't do it, but I don't see how it's "absurd" ...

Chris Katko

Time is money. If you have money, but no time, (or vice-versa) it makes sense to convert it into another form.

I was in the Stone Talon Mountains and Sun Rock got raided by at least 27 (!) (L50+) people. But I got the last laugh because I picked off a level 16 when they weren't looking (I was 20 or so). ;D

p.s. I really like it when a high level alliance just passes me by with no more than a wave. It makes me want to do the same when I see someone else in the same situation.

Billybob

Problem is you can't sell WoW items or money. It's against Blizzard's policies. So...good luck with that.

Yeah... goodluck with that. ;D

Trezker

It's not impossible just because it's forbidden, but if you're caught they can ban you from the game.
