Well, it's Valentine's day tomorrow and I've sent a nice card to a girl I like. I fully expect to crash and burn in spectacular fashion tomorrow, but I realised I would rather regret doing it then regret never telling her how I feel.

I expect to get too little sleep, go to lectures at 8, 10 and 15 and do a lab at 17, and then crash to bed exhausted. Yay!

On Monday I will stand up at about quarter past five (beat that!) so I can have a sufficient breakfast and still arrive in time at work which starts at half past six. Once I've sat through the day I'll return home and play World of Warcraft. Valentine's Day is a stupid imported holiday and I find it dumb to take over a bunch of rituals and traditions all at once from other cultures as it is currently happening. Moreover I don't have anybody to call my Valentine.

I'm going to boycott valentine's and be sour faced all day. It was the post office in the first place whose fault it exists here.

Tomorrow you will regret having told her how you feel. That's just the way women are. Even if she already likes you a bit, if you tell her straight up how much you like her, you will come off desperate and she'll like you less. It's sad that people are like that, but you can't fool yourself that good and honest intentions will ultimately get you the girl of your dreams. Unfortunately it's all a bit of a game.

The good news is that, while women get scared off by a man being straight up, honest and to-the-point, they take hints a lot better than men. So don't pass up the opportunity of a rose and a card with a nice heartfelt message - a message that tells her how special she is, but doesn't mention anything about taking the friendship (if there is one) to the next level. A card with a really nice message will get her friends on your side too .

PS. The thing about women is that, while they are marvellous at taking hints, they also read into things too much. The other thing is that they make a distinction between male friends and men they would be intimate with. Because they are like this, they think we are like this. So my point is not to say that she's a really good friend. She'll think that's all she is to you, nothing more. So don't use the f word. Godspeed.

Well, being desperate is a turnoff for all girls I have ever spoken to. They want to feel special, and a guy who'se desperate and tries to get each and every girl he sees obviously doesn't do that.
However, you don't have to come across as being desperate and if you don't, all girls I know enjoy attention and affection, even if they don't return the feeling they still think its sweet.
It can make a friendship more complicated though.

It is possible to be desperately obsessed with the one girl. That's what I was talking about.

That's the problem - you risk becoming a "sweety". Give a girl attention and her feeling of self-worth increases - she becomes even more out of your league. Brush her off when she says hello and you'll be stuck in her head for the rest of the day. Of course, this behaviour goes completely against the nature of the "nice guy".

I've been burned so many times trying to do romantic stuff for girls it's downright embarrassing. Valentines day or not. If I ever find myself in a relationship again the unlucky girl will get no romance from me. It's a waste of time (and money... oh the money) and they don't even like it (as my experience has taught me).

I do agree that valentine's day is (or has become) a commercially hyped event though, one I wouldn't really take part in. If I'd feel like doing something for the occasion, I'd do it a week in advance or a few days after.

Just put aside the valentine's day stuff for a minute. It's a time to say how you feel to someone you like. While any day will do, valentine's day is a convienient excuse.

Who gives flowers anyway? Real men give women potatoes. Think about it; a flower is a pretty, but practically useless thing. It will wilt in a few days and then you throw it out. In other words, giving flowers is like saying "I like you on a superficial level, and when you grow old and ugly I'll leave you". Now, a potato, a potato is awesome. They don't look like much, but the inside counts like mad. You can boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew... and they never bite it. Leave them around and they just sprout wiggly things and eventually new potatoes. Giving away a potato is like saying, "I love you in more than one way, for your inner qualities and our love will never die."

Let's see. I went to the Valentine's day dance with someone (same girl as all the dances). I sent her a carnation and a card. And I am spending tomorrow on a field trip to our local theater for a play. It just happens this same girl is in the class I am going on the field trip in. (My drama class, only 8 people in the class so the single class can take a trip by itself.)

Well, I have been reading this thread since the beggining, but I didn't feel like posting...

Here is my Valentine's day :
I planned doing nothing special, Valentine's commercial day pisses me off, I do no have a girlfriend and there was no way that situation could change anyway yesterday.

So I spent the day sitting on the internet, toying with my laptop, and eventually doing some programming.

But in the evening I meet a ( female ) friend on MSN ( I mean, a friend IRL, not an internet friend ). She had a really bad day at work, and was quite disappointed to see she hadn't got any Valentine's email from a mysterious stranger, as it ought to happen in films where everything is more beautiful than in real life ( well, that's quite exactly what she said ).

The thing is that I really have a crush on this girl, we are good friends, and she probably knows I love her, but anyway the situation is quite odd, since she is acting quite as if there coudl be something between us. Well that is a bit off-topic.

Anyway as she was complaining, I really began to feel guilty, as if she was trying to say she woudl have liked to get an email from me ( well, you know how girls try to put some implicit messages on what seem to be innocent sayings ). But in the meantime, what I thought could also have been totally rubbish.

But I decided not to think to much about what I should do, and rushed on google, find an ecard site, chose a beautiful ecard with roses ( as a matter of fact, I already gave this girl virtual roses on IRC with a bot of mine, and her family name is 'Rose'... Go figure ), wrote a quick but nice message, and sent it.

She received it, said I was dumb to have done it, but was very pleased anyway

You can't figure how I felt after she went to bed and left me alone with my computer and the lovely quit message she wrote
