Everybody! Go download EasyToon and animate. It's great fun.
Here's my first attempt:

Oops, sorry.

That's really good!
Thanks!
Here's some more:
I warn you all, what you are about to see is my real drawling skill, it was not done by someone else. This is the real deal:
http://www.cljy.com/~billy/StupidAnim.gif
hmmm methinks JP is quite good at this. Either that or you and I are just bad . (mine was too shameful to even post).
I agree. That program didn't make me an animator.
Dunno, I still think lopes takes the cake...
lmao, mockup is broken again
Marcello

Edit: Doesn't Johan have a Tablet PC? Won't that explain the good drawing?
http://www.loomsoft.net/downloads/other/zeppy.gif
Drawn really quick, and I made the speed way too fast, but I don't really care. It's ZEP! Maybe my next one will be done with more care and look a lot nicer!
Heh; this is just like how I envisioned my animation editor (Bola). Except this actually works
I have to get back to that one of these epoches ...
Ultio: Nice. After viewing the image Marcello tried to post, maybe you should have Zep in an action fighter game. Would be interesting. (Zep fits the characteristics, thus why I say Zep.)
Kanzure: that would rule! I can see Zep doing all sorts of crazy things and looking absolutely rockin' while doing them. Don't worry; Zep isn't through yet. He'll appear once again, for sure (in a game, that is. heh).
o__O Lopez is da best... I don't think many of us here are real artistic with the exception of Pietz and Marcello.
I don't think many of us here are real artistic with the exception of Pietz and Marcello.
Hey!!
Anyway, yeah. Shame the mock-up broke on that one; everyone view it! It's definitely the best so far
Have you guys seen the one that's in color where the random guy goes around killing tons of school girls (and it keeps a count showing in one of the corners)? That one rules. I forget what it's called so I don't have a link, but if someone knows it, post it! It's great. Frigging amazing, actually.
Tee hee

Clearly, it doesn't give you the ability to draw well, but, man, is it easy to animate with this thing or what?! I'll answer that. Yes, yes it is.
Also, I certainly stole Johan's theme of people constantly getting smashed by a giant hammer by giant people, except in this case, it's people constantly being magically transmogrified into a small bit of indeterminate matter and eaten by a giant.
Ultio: Yeah, I posted that a while ago. Hang on; I'll see if I can find it ...
EDIT: Found it! I rock ... I warn you it's pretty bloody though
EDIT2: As long as we're talking awesome animation, who's seen this movie yet? Cool cel-shaded 3D rendered fight scene. Bonus points for stealing a Transformers sound effect
Some even cooler ones (what inspired lopes'):

Click work on the menu, then click the various Acts 1-10 (yep there are 10 of them!) under the "anime" section on the right.
Marcello
I'm definately keeping this program!

Johan: I FORMALLY CHALLENGE you to make a game in this style using animations like that!
Edit: Doesn't Johan have a Tablet PC? Won't that explain the good drawing?
Nope, that's all mouse work. I have a tablet, but I never get my lines striaght using it. :/
Johan: I FORMALLY CHALLENGE you to make a game in this style using animations like that!
Well, it's a deal. But that means you do one too, right?
It's would require heaps of artwork though. Maybe the best approach would be to write a game using vector graphics and then have your own wiggly drawing primitives.
void line_wiggly(BITMAP *bmp, int x1, int y2, int x2, int y2, int width, double wigglyness); // etc...
Oh man, it's gonna hurt the eys.
Unfortunately I don't have time at the moment to do one. I'd like too as well.
How long did those animations take to do? I imagine a lot quicker than normal colour gfx animations. As long as you store the animations in a compressed format I think you'd only have memory to worry about.
Perhaps someone else can do a lineart style game as well as you in my place?
They took about an hour each. I made some stupid mistakes in the first one, which bogged me down. Hmm... We'll see.
They took about an hour each.
Don't you have some kickarse game to develop? Nobody should have that much random free time to make..animations like that.
Thanks for the link Johan.. Now I have a way to make pointless stick figure animations on a pc Just like the ones I used to do in H.S. on flip books. Weeee
Here's what I have so far.. Ph33r my 1337 pixal skeelz.
http://paranoima.dyn.ee/wip-1.gif
right now, I'm not sure how I plan to end it but I'm sure something will come to me soon.
Don't you have some kickarse game to develop?
Hmm... I guess I do. Richard, I hope you don't get too mad, but I think I'll drop out from the challenge.
Hmm..
I hereby nominate Kanzure to fulfill the challenge. Since he discouraged you, he should take full responsability!
Kanzure seems to forget that people need to take a break from things once in a while
I hereby nominate Kanzure to fulfill the challenge
Hmm..I'm affraid I can't accept the challange right now. For one, I have no experiance with anything (but blitting) needed for a game like that, so meh. Would be fun.
Maybe we can abduct somebody else to do it.
Kanzure seems to forget that people need to take a break from things once in a while
Hmm ... well, one could do it without doing crazy vector graphics by simply using the images the program generates as it's tiles / character anims. A simple tilemap ... just one in which all tiles are animated. It could actually be kinda cool ... if painful to look at. Although I suppose then you'd have to worry about repetitive animations become annoying, not to mention the extra file size.
The cartoon Ed, Edd, and Eddy looks like how the game would be. It's not hard on the eyes, because it uses multiple colors. Just the outlines go swiggly and such..
Kanzure, You must join with the animating side. It is your destiny!!!
Search your feelings..
Heh I'd use Johan's suggestion and just make a custom line function that makes lines look hand drawn. Everythign would be outline form but it'd all look like pencil drawings and the animation would never "repeat". It'd be slower than straight line drawing but it'd ne a nicer effect. I'd use vectors/polygons for everything, you could make circles and all sorts of shapes from just points and lines.
Search your feelings..
But Google doesn't do that!
There is a game out there (a platformer) that uses wiggly vector lines for it's graphics. I remember it actually being quite good. Don't remember what it was called though :S.
There was a Tetris game with wiggly lines not so long ago, they didn't move though.
It would be really cool to see a 3D game with wiggly black/white gfx.
Also [url http://robotduck.com/] has several sketchy games, but I want to turn your attention to Yard Invaders
On my old Mac (68k) I have a game called Adventures of Sean, IIRC. The graphics are almost as magnific as all your animations in this thread.
We need a StickHack compo!
We need a StickHack compo!
No, just a "challange".
ahem
w00t!
1,000th post!

Haha, that's great!

What about yoshi's island?
Marcello
I thought yoshi's island just had think black outlines to it's sprites - I can't remember them wiggling but I may be wrong.
There were times in which they wiggle, but not always, it was fairly static.
well stuff like the flowers and whatnot wiggled.
Marcello
I suppose they did .
The lines didn't "wiggle". It just looked like it was colored by crayons.
You want animation with lines that "wiggle", go watch Stickin' Around
http://www.cljy.com/~billy/swimming.gif
That's great William!
I didn't necessarily mean wiggly lines. Just a game that had this quick cartoon style animation. Think The Mighty Stopid in Johan's style. , or Alex 4 in a b/w cartoon 640 x 480 (or higher) mode.
Well, I like the look even if no one else does!
I could make a game with quick cartoon style animation, especially since ANY drawing I do is going to look all wiggly and cruddy.
Hey, you guys can collaberate on sprites for "Oh, Diana!" or whatever it's called
Ok. I finally got up the courage to do one.
.. and it is the best one here and you know it!
http://www.ericswebsite.com/allegroiscool.gif
I keep starting, doing like 3 frames, and then giving up.
I keep starting, doing like 3 frames, and then giving up.
Yup, that pretty much sums it up for me too.
Yeah. The above was my first try.
I tried to do a sword fight a minute ago.. with a ninja who had nunchakus.
Third frame in, "how about no! Ok, Derezo?".
a classic (4k?) demo did 3d with wiggling lines. looked really drawn and nice. saw it some 5+ years ago.
"the paper demo" if you wanna look for it. DOS of course.
If it's stickmen you want, check out
XiaoXiao
Also I read somewhere an article about a gui using wiggly 'hand-drawn' lines..
Finally for UK folks there's always Roobarb and Custard
Pete
If it's stickmen you want, check out
XiaoXiao
I saw this some time ago. The third one is GREAT:)
Yea, me too. I should go see them again, cause I have cable now and it wont take forever to download 'em.
Everybody has seen them. They aren't new. Now if only somebody could make that in C/C++, as a reusable engine...mm...possibilities.

WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. This actually happened to me, three weeks ago.
[EDIT]
The animation seems to have taken me four hours and 35 minutes. That was with losing a frame at one point though ...
Beware: if you click 'New Animation' (which I tend to do by mistake instead of clicking 'New Frame'), it will lose your work - even if you cancel the dimensions dialogue. This happened when I first tried the program out, and I lost the whole animation. It happened twice today, but this time I was saving frequently; I lost nothing the first time, and I lost one frame the second time. It could have been worse.
Oh, and I highly recommend animation if you want to practise getting proportions and perspective right. It forces you to see the errors and fix them.
Nice animation but:
The animation seems to have taken me four hours and 35 minutes
I believe there is a copy button in there, so, why did it take so long? Just copy the background, paste it each time, and draw the character a bit different. Repeat. (That itself would take at least an hour..)
Pfffffft. James, you keep giving up. Kanzure, your animation doesn't exactly demonstrate any real artistic ability (not to say you couldn't draw well if you put more time - like, four hours or more - into it!).
And if the program did layers, I would have been quicker.
any real artistic ability
Never in my life have I said I have "artistic ability"
Ever wonder why I don't do my own game graphics?
Ever wonder why I don't do my own game graphics?
No, should we?
Marcello
No. Stalkers
Well then Kanzure, I guess you aren't qualified to comment on the amount of time I took, are you.
I have never re-compiled a linux kernel, but I know it does not take 32 hours. Because I haven't, I'm not allowed to make an educated guess? What a cruel world.
Its not an educated guess if you have no data/experience to back it up with.
It might qualify to be a guestimate, maybe.
You can hardly compare art to a technical process that can be timed.
Marcello
I didn't say your animation was bad, or that it took too long, just that I'm amazed you had the patience to finish it. 10 minutes and I'm like: "AAhh!". 20 and I'm like: "Ggrg arrgg feeuuggrr! fuu! grrrr". 4 1/2 hours and all my hair would be torn out and I would be frothing at the mouth...
I dunno -- when I've played around with art programs and it's been going decently (read: using wings3d), I can spend many hours modelling and I won't even notice the time go by. If one is making some progress the whole time, instead of getting something that one likes less with every addition, it can be quite absorbing. Much like coding -- who hasn't done a spree of at least 4.5 hours coding and enjoyed it?
Just did one, actually Much joy in tonight's journal entry ...
Oh, sorry James - hope I didn't offend you then. If you find art frustrating, have you tried following a tutorial?
who hasn't done a spree of at least 4.5 hours coding and enjoyed it?
I've easily done >8hr stretches.
Much joy in tonight's journal entry ...
Have you posted it yet? Can only see the only for the 19th? I've looked at the top & bottom.
Bobby finally reordered the journal entries, and added commenting abilities again (yay!) Entry coming later tonight ...
If you find art frustrating, have you tried following a tutorial?
Actually I love doing my own graphics. I did most of the art for my rpg (see my sig) and really enjoyed it. In fact I even did it in my own bmp editor. It's just that when something seems a bit pointless and I know that I have loads of real work to do (assignments etc.), it agitates me.
Gotcha. You're above the rest of us then
Hell yeah, miles above .
Have you posted it yet?
Have now. Start leaving comments again!
I tried leaving a comment, but it doesn't seem to have worked.
Anyway, sounds like you made good progress and got a lot done! I'll be looking forward to seeing those screenshots.
