... has been performed. Do we dare hope for a release within 2 weeks?

Looks like some player slaughtered a human village and left the corpses by the road.
It looks like he was using a halberd (which fits in with the scattered limbs), which means he must be a human, and there was probably a human bowman by the arrows broken and lying on the ground.

I tried to get into Dwarf Fortress, but I couldn't stand the crummy user interface.

The lack of graphics is fine, I can see where it gives the game a retro feel and encourages that area of the brain known as 'imagination'. But there's no excuse for the god-awful interface for controlling your dwarves. It's clumsy, slow, inefficient, difficult to learn, and in my opinion, wrecks the game.

I did play it a bit last year. I have to agree it could be a lot better with a more accessible interface (mouse driven perhaps with support for tabbed documents(like inventories, dwarf stats, etc.)).

It doesn't have to be (actually, it probably shouldn't be) mouse driven, but it should at least be internally consistent - as it is, there's no logic to which navigation controls are used in which menu, shortcuts vary slightly (just so much that it becomes a problem) between item construction and placement, and so on. The rest could be enormously streamlined: certain parts are (even relatively speaking!) just horribly clunky, like the entire military command interface. Then there's stuff like the completely unimportant distinction between mined and constructed features, which leads to a whole slew of UI niggles. And the list goes on...

(That said, it is still addictive despite its glaring UI flaws...)

I think the interface is going to be a bit more streamlined in the new release. Combined with the improved military management, it should be a lot less cumbersome.

It'd be great if it used a real interface; be it ncurses or a modern GUI. Just something better than the icky and painfully slow opengl-drawing-ascii that is going on now.

As a matter of personal preference, I dislike the graphics. I've never seen graphics like that, and I've played ANCII games (ZZT, Megazeux, Sleuth, ...). It feels really messy and hard on the eyes compared to something like these:

{"name":"returntokroz.gif","src":"http:\/\/static.allegro.cc\/image\/cache\/e\/a\/eaaaa7df76fbd8fcababa04fdcaa91fc.gif","w":640,"h":400,"tn":"http:\/\/static.allegro.cc\/image\/cache\/e\/a\/eaaaa7df76fbd8fcababa04fdcaa91fc"}returntokroz.gif
{"name":"zzt.jpg","src":"http:\/\/static.allegro.cc\/image\/cache\/3\/c\/3cb259320030ebf65f64e374a642d9b7.jpg","w":646,"h":377,"tn":"http:\/\/static.allegro.cc\/image\/cache\/3\/c\/3cb259320030ebf65f64e374a642d9b7"}zzt.jpg
{"name":"megazeux.png","src":"http:\/\/static.allegro.cc\/image\/cache\/a\/4\/a40dcdb1e69b2255af43ef99799fc86a.png","w":640,"h":350,"tn":"http:\/\/static.allegro.cc\/image\/cache\/a\/4\/a40dcdb1e69b2255af43ef99799fc86a"}megazeux.png

(The last one, is in fact still in text-mode! The game hacks the ANCII set in memory.)

However, I do support your efforts! It looks really complex and impressive!

Chris, you seem to be confusing ANSI and ASCII.

I might give the game another serious try when the new version is out. Back when I played it, I didn't get very far. I only dug a few caves, built beds and stuff for my dwarfs but I kept failing at building a huge dwarven empire and eventually lost interest in starting over and over again (though I must say, it was kind of fun to fail, because all the different ways of failing I experienced were so unique and unseen from other games).
