Hey guys, I started working on a Minecraft clone last week. I've made a bit of progress. If you guys have any game ideas, let me know. Eventually, I'd like to incorporate fine-detail terrain destruction. I think I'll be able to model the terrain via octree based voxels. I'll post future updates here, as well as on my blog. -------------------------------------------------- |

Maybe you could go with another setting for a difference with Minecraft. Maybe something futuristic, like finding a planet, and setting up a base. Gadgets like Auto-Turrets would help you defend from the inhabitants. You could also use a radar or a little exploration robot to sense where resources are located. Some textures would be nice, in terms of graphics. I think you should focus on making a game with a versus mode instead of a never ending universe. The ideas of gathering resources from minecraft are nice but seem too time consuming, use dynamite or some thing to create large objects faster. Also add an in game cad editor.

I think you're making impressive progress. References

Ah, but if you crashed, and lost most of your technology/tools, then you would. Continuing from that idea, you could randomize exactly which bits of equipment survive the crash, or allow some of it to eventually be fixed once the right requisites are met, or allow parts to be found eventually once you've explored the territory...

The idea of repairing your damaged technology is somewhat intriguing, I must say. The idea of fashioning turrets out of raw materials is still off-putting to me though. If it were in the future, but your technology was broken, and your ultimate aim was to repair it and escape, that might be interesting (assuming the repairs were rudimentary enough to be hand crafted). Of course, the materials needed to escape should require some rare ore that takes time to discover. In the meantime, you'd have to fashion tools and weapons similar to Minecraft to survive. -- acc.js | al4anim - Allegro 4 Animation library | Allegro.cc Mockup | Allegro.cc <code> Tag | Allegro 4 Timer Example (w/ Semaphores) | Bambot | Blog | C++ STL Container Flowchart | Castopulence Software | Check Return Values | Is This A Discussion? Just clone the exact game and give it away for free. |

I never played Minecraft (Or really know what it's about...)I might look into it. I like games with 3D editors. (Even though all I know is Cube and derivatives...) ============================= |

Instead of having to "craft" your futuristic equipment, when you crash you lose your special power genarator that just so happened to be the source of power for everything you had with you. So you start with all the equipment and no way to power it. Finding some special energy crystals can charge your equipment for a while, but they are rare so it's up to you to decide what's more important to power up - your quad laser turbo cannon extreme for dealing with aliens, or your ultimate undergound headtorch, or even the coffee machine to get some health back. Quote: ... No, the 30 day limit in Pikmin isn't something like Tomoso suggested(I think). I suppose he meant that you have an oxygen tank, and you've got to go back to someplace to refill it. That way, you'd look for upgrading it first before exploring large areas. bamccaig said: The idea of fashioning turrets out of raw materials is still off-putting to me though.
How about if you had to find a way to power it(wire some blocks) to a power source(minerals underground)? Still, that'd be complex, but it's a nice gameplay idea. You'd like to set up a safe place somewhere near power sources, and the most powerful ones would be occupied by the inhabitants. That's where you come in and take it by force bamccaig said: I think what's fun about Minecraft to me is the feeling of surviving on my own without all kinds of technology... Hence the name and the setting. I'm just saying that for having some fun instead of using the same setting, he should create something different. Well I also tend to only enjoy things that are explainable and obey the universe's rules. If there's going to be some magical mineral powering things then I'd expect a decent explanation for how it works and what the limitations are. There has to be structure to it for it to be fun to me. Otherwise it's just some magical plot device. That's boring. -- acc.js | al4anim - Allegro 4 Animation library | Allegro.cc Mockup | Allegro.cc <code> Tag | Allegro 4 Timer Example (w/ Semaphores) | Bambot | Blog | C++ STL Container Flowchart | Castopulence Software | Check Return Values | Is This A Discussion? Heh, I want to make a Minecraft clone now. Will this start a hot new trend? |

There's actually a ton of different directions the game could be taken in. Here are a few I've come up with. Creative modeThis version would be a lot like the creative mode from Mincraft. However, you'd have the ability to perform terrain destruction at sub-cube level. Basically, I'd use octrees to model fine-grain terrain destruction. RogueLike modeThink nethack, but in 3D and semi-real time. There would also be some light crafting a la ADOM. HarvestMoon/FarmVille modeI really enjoyed the Harvest Moon series. And to a lesser extent I enjoyed FarmVille. I'd love to see a game like Minecraft where the gameplay emphasis is on running a productive farm rather than killing bad guys. -------------------------------------------------- |

Forget the futuristic setting I proposed, I'll use that one for a game of mine some other time. bamccaig said: If there's going to be some magical mineral powering things then I'd expect a decent explanation for how it works and what the limitations are. What, you're expecting me to give you now in a thread a whole explanation of my powering system of minerals in a planet? It's beyond human's comprehension, sorry. TranslatorHack 2010, a human translation chain in a.cc. |

I've got a decent camera model working. I also included octree querying. More info and download link. -------------------------------------------------- |
