Starmap browser (ARTS job)

This project is requested at ARTS. (read more here)

Looking for someone to do this (can also be found at here):

Starmap browser: Program a system that allows user to form up pretty complex universe with solar systems, space anomalities and such. (More detailed info available for those intrested). Not a game. Purpose of this is to easen the creation of my personal Scifi / Fantasy project. The project has so many worlds and places it is hard to keep them real without good maps, and my papermaps are starting to look like crap and there are just way too many of them. The system is supposed to be visually atleast something like MOO3 game. Dont worry about the graphics, the creator may use just simple gfx, i will myself do the hard gfx later on. For more details -> samuli.jomppanen (at) pp.inet.fi

These questions have been allready asked from me.
Do you have maps available already in digital format? What format are they in?:
No maps are existing. Map format should be created. I forgot to tell that the browser should be able to edit the "universe".

What kind of objects do you need to view? Do you use a 3D or 2D space?:
2D sprites in Isometric kind of view would do. But 2D sprites in 3D rotating world would be the best. No need for 3D model planets and such. :S (Look MOO3)

Does you want a windows executable? MUST be Windows executable. :S

Why it has to be so visual since it is only for "cataloging worlds"?:
Well its not actually only for that. It is also for helping me to tell more about the worlds and show them visually.

Thanks. I imagine all scifi novellistist and such would like this kind of system. I know i need it because the immense size of my storyworld.

This is what i had in mind for the structure of the universe:

Starsystem structure

world : Name
World2 : Name
->
region : Name
region2 : Name
->
System (Sun) : Name
->
Planet orbiting Sun : Name, Description
->Moon
->Moons : Name, Description
Anomality (Black hole, Flux field etc) : Name : Description
Asteroid field : Name : Description
Anomality (Black hole, Flux field etc)

Example:
Planet: Earth
Moon(s): Luna
System: Sol
Region: Someregion
World: OurUniversum

Worlds form up in 60x60 grid.
There are 7 regions per world. Some of the regions might not contain any star systems.
Systems are based on their own free cordinates originating from the World center
> Planets have distanse set onto them how far away from the sun they are orbiting.
> Moons have same thing with planets that planets have with local sun.
Anomalities are just like planets and suns but dont have any orbiters.

----

Following text explains how one could navigate to single planet from the beginning (For example).

First the user must pick one of the Worlds layed on 60x60 (or so) 3D grid. After the selection there appears this screen where we can see the 7 regions of this "world". Each region and world should have short description with it. Including possible political coloring. After the user has chosen region of the world 3D view opens where we can see the center system of this region. Usually HQ planet of local government. From this point user should be able either just roll with mouse to see other systems or just type cordinates. When arriwing to cordinates we would see the local star system or anomality. If star system, then we would see also the orbiting planets (animated if possible) and the moons of the planets (also animated if possible). By selecting each object we would get a short description.

ยค#%&. And i tryied to write it all down. :S

Ok. Which part you dont understand?

Oh and ... Does anyone know wikipedia style system that can operate completely independently. And virtually on any machine of the 2000-2006 computer generation.
Needing it for same thing than this Starmap browser.

I've been fairly busy with various ARTS jobs lately, so I'm going to give a pass on the starmap browser.

This is easy, if you can install apache + mysql + php locally and run mediawiki on it. The you can have your own personal wiki.

I'm quite interested, because I could use this in my future project. Right now I have to go to work, but I'll take a closer look at it as I get home.

Sounds like an interesting project. But I'm busy with other things... :D

To the wikipedia issue. I ment standalone program. It does not have so much options as the real wikipedia. Just system with hyperlinking. And maybe one image per page or so.

I would have installed the required stuff to run the HTML wiki, but because it is supposed to be easily transferred to people who also want it. And most of them dont even know what PHP.. or SQL is.

OICW: Please. This Starmap browser would aid my projects and world building a lot.
So.. Do it :D .. heh.. I mean it would be cool to get someone with real skillz like you guys to do it.

about the wiki, Tiddlywiki may be of interest. It is supposed to be all small, local, self-contained. Worth checking out.

Tiddlywiki seems great!

So seems really interesting, I think I could try to do something, at least I'll think hard about it. But I have couple questions.

1. Do you need a galactic map like spiral galaxy etc. or Master Of Orion style is enough?
2. Should be there depth or the solar systems are gonna be at the same plane?
3. What do you exactly mean with the 60x60 grid?

1. No. Moo3 type is very sufficient.
2. Well systems can be on same plane. But it would be cool to have system dots be in 3d space.
3. Well it was just example of one way to do it. Grid. But i suppose they can reside in freespace. So dont mind too much about the layout thing.

Well it seems usefull for me too, I'll think about it and probably start working on it. I have to do some brainstorming and write down some things. For now it looks like the stars will have their positions to the origin (galactic core). So you'll add there three coordinates plus the other things.

Edit: Ok I'm slowly trying to get UI running, after learning how Allegro GUI works I figured out that it's not very friendly to OpenGl (simply the menu doesn't show up). I'm already downloading Masking to see what I can do. Anyway my fisrt idea was to use this project to learn WinAPI, at least I'll learn OpenGL.

Edit2: I'm not promising anything, if I'll be able to get this program running and working in a decent way I could continue.

If I were to start on such a project I'd use Qt4.2, with its nice new QGraphicsView that can draw on a regular widget, or a QGLWidget :D

I was thinking about working on this, maybe if no one else does.

It would be nice to have the option to also pay real money for ARTS jobs. The rupee system wouldn't be replaced; real money would just be an option and the rupees would still serve their original purpose and also be an indicator of the rupee-holder's reputation of getting the job done. And someone could make a bit of money doing this too ;D. Sort of like the Allegro version of those freelance sites.

Steve++: you already have that option :) There is nothing preventing you from asking for real money in your bid. And of course Exitialis is not forced to accept.

Although I would recommend against it, you're completely on your own legally speaking.
