Author's Description: Bataafje is a small game written for the Allegro SpeedHack 2003 (see also allegro.cc and speedhack.allegro.cc). In short, the Allegro SpeedHack is an international competition in which you have to write a game using the game programming library "Allegro" within 72 hours (one weekend). It is impossible to write the game entirely before this weekend because only at the last moment (Friday 12:00 UTC) a special set of rules is published.

Note that this version of Bataafje is slightly extended:

The characters fade away if they're killed.
Much more animations and characters.
This time, my brother, Duco Vollebregt (Dutch website), made all the graphics for the game.

Features are: 3d intro, 3d fractal tree (see below), comical hand-drawn animations of six different enemies, easily extendible to handle more enemies and more bullets, a builtin nibbles / snake clone with up to three quite smart CPU-controlled snakes.

  • 5The 3d spinning text in the opening screen is pretty cool as well as the 3d fractal tree at the end but the gameplay leaves much to be desired. All you did is throw random sprites at oncoming enemies. You can't really lose, except for running out of ammo.
